It’s been a long day. After Ryder’s visit, I spent the rest of the day preparing to leave again. Catching up on emails, meetings and signing off stories makes the hours shoot past and I don’t give Holly a thought until the moon shines outside my window and I notice it’s seven already.
Feeling bad that I’ve left her on her first day, I check my phone to see where she is. I doubt she knows about the tracking device I activated on her phone and smirk to myself. Yes, I may have set my baby free, but she will always be under my control.
Noting that she’s not even in the office, I feel the irritation pushing against my reasoning when I see she’s at the bar across the street. I’m guessing she went with the rest of the hacks to the usual after work binge and just thinking of her with those bastards makes me so angry, I’m liable to do something I regret. Instead, I just fire off a quick text.
My office now.
She doesn’t reply and I tap my fingers on the desk angrily when five minutes pass.
Typing again, I put in capitals. NOW!
Trying to turn my attention back to business, I find it impossible as I imagine her being hit on by every bastard in that team and it’s only when the phone vibrates, I look down and see her reply.
Sorry, my BOSS invited me out for a drink to get to know me better.
Seriously, that fucker had better not be getting any ideas about my new apprentice.
Beating out a response, I type.
I don’t fucking care. Make your excuses and meet me in my office. We’re going home, unless you want to fuck him for a bed for the night.
I watch with some satisfaction five minutes later, the little dot on my screen moving toward the building. I knew this was a good idea. I can keep tabs on her and she doesn’t even know.
It takes her around twenty minutes to navigate the security and make her way to my office and as the door opens, I look at her with a sense of pride. There she is, my woman.
She looks weary, as if she’s just worked for a week, and I note the tired eyes that are staring at me apologetically.
“I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t think I could refuse. I need to bond with the team, it’s exhausting.”
She sighs and I shrug. “Bond with them in another way through the work you do, not the drinks you consume before they try to fuck you a welcome.”
She looks shocked and I shrug. “You think I don’t know what goes on? Those men are animals, aren’t we all in fact, which is why I am eager to take you home—to bed.”
“Home?”
I grab my briefcase and smirk. “Yes, home, Holly, because now you have another role to fulfill and I need to show you your office.”
I head out of the room and ignore the pained look in her eyes as I expect her to follow me like a geisha girl. Tonight, Holly will learn just what she signed up for and after the day I’ve had, I’m impatient to distance my mind from the impending nightmare that just won’t go away.
Sam is waiting as we hit the lobby and falls into step beside me.
“It’s all set, everything’s in place.”
“Good.”
Holly is running to keep up and I wonder how she’ll react when she learns I moved her apartment to mine and canceled her rental. She’ll be pissed no doubt, but surely my penthouse is a welcome swap. Her one bedroomed apartment on the rough side of town must be a welcome sight in her rear-view mirror out of there.
My car is waiting and Sam holds open the door and I step inside, closely followed by Holly and as Sam jumps into the front, I remove the papers from my briefcase and set about using the time I have before we arrive.
Holly is silent and I forget she’s here until she coughs nervously, “Um, thanks for the heads up about the Powers story. It really helped to know the backstory when I arrived. It didn’t make me sound like an idiot when they were discussing it.”
“You’re welcome.”
I carry on reading and she laughs nervously, “It’s been a strange day.”
Placing the documents back in the case, I sigh. “Holly, as much as I love knowing you enjoyed your first day, it doesn’t run my empire, so word of advice, when I’m working, shut the fuck up.”
