Holly

Two years later

Maisy giggles as we watch a scene we never thought would be outside the window.

Dexter and Jason are deep in conversation, pushing two strollers toward the stables.

Maisy grins. “It suits them.”

“I agree.” I can’t stop staring at the man I have fallen hopelessly in love with who I now call my husband.

Dexter arranged a wedding so quickly my head spun and we became Mr. and Mrs. Prince two months after he proposed.

It was a huge affair; the biggest society had seen for quite some time and I was overwhelmed at the number of guests and scale of decadence he arranged at such short notice. I just went along with it because I wanted him and would have been happy to marry him on a beach somewhere, or in town, because all that mattered was becoming his wife.

“How are you feeling, honey, you must be tired?”

Maisy smiles with concern and I sigh. “I’m fine most of the time, but this sickness never seems to go away.”

I inadvertently rub my stomach that is now holding baby number three, and Maisy laughs. “Good job it’s not twins again, you would definitely have your hands full then.”

Laughing, I look out of the window at the two babies who surprised us so happily. One boy and one girl. Two gorgeous bundles of love that we both dote on. Phoebe and Jacob, two beautiful souls who Dexter is obsessed with and I laugh. “No, just one this time, it will be fine.”

Maisy nods and looks at her own husband pushing her new-born baby.

“Fatherhood suits them.”

“It sure does.”

Sighing, I turn away from the window and groan.

“I’ve got this story to finish by close of business. I should get started if I’m going to reach the deadline.”

“I’ll fetch you a coffee and some apple cake. Go and do what you do, honey, and I’ll do the same.”

Smiling, I head off to my den that I share with Dexter and still can’t quite believe how things worked out. Rather than go back to my apprenticeship, I now freelance for several of Dexter’s channels of distribution. I’ve also got my own Vlog and have become quite the businesswoman since I put my mind to it.

As I settle down, I smile when I see the screensaver of our wedding photo.

Both sets of parents flank us on either side and for once my father looks proud. My stepmother was beside herself when she learned of my good fortune and has been bugging me ever since to become her new best friend. It always makes me laugh to see Colton standing awkwardly on the edge of the photograph, completely out of place and wishing he was anywhere but there. It turns out he helped Dexter with whatever problem he had and then ran off to join some biker gang.

We don’t see much of him, but he shows up at family occasions and seems happy. I think he’s also got a girlfriend because I heard him talking to Jason about some girl he was seeing, although the name appears to change every time he visits.

Looking at Dexter’s parents, I smile happily because they look so proud of their son. It’s still early days, but we are building bridges and he is relaxing more around them as he comes to terms with the guilt he’s always felt after his sister’s death. It’s obvious they never blamed him for that, but he can’t look them in the eye, but the kids have helped heal the rift a little and they visit often.

Sighing, I click on my laptop and set about having it all because Dexter encourages me to work and we both make sure that at least one of us is always here with the children. He flies in every evening from the city and sometimes Maisy and Jason babysit and we have date night at his penthouse. We may be equals outside the bedroom, but Dexter still loves to dominate inside it and I love every minute of it.

Yes, it’s funny how things work out and our future is bright. Sometimes trust is all you need with a lot of love thrown in. The perfect recipe for marriage—at least I think so.
