“What’s happens then?”

I’m so confused, as he reverts back to the hard-assed king he is by saying roughly, “You will remain here at the palace, locked in your suite of rooms. I can’t take the chance any harm comes to you and you will be tended from there.”

“Harm, what are you talking about?”

“Don’t question me, Cassie, just know I have your best interests at heart. Your friends will attend you and act as your bridal party. Your parents may visit, but nobody else. The next few days will be spent preparing you for our wedding in three days’ time.”

“Three days, are you mad?”

I stare at him in horror and he grins, looking like a demon as the candles cast a glow against his face.

“The wedding has been arranged for months. There was only one piece left to fit and now it’s in place we can proceed.”

“But why so fast?”

“Why not?” He shrugs and, gripping my hand tightly, pulls me toward the door and says firmly, “The guards will escort you to your rooms. Your friends are waiting. Our deal is done.”

As he opens the door with a flourish, the guards stand to attention and he says imperiously, “Take my bride to her rooms and place a guard on her 24/7. Nobody enters without my authority.”

The guards salute and fall into step on either side and as they close around me, I struggle to breathe as my life alters direction and I walk away from the man who made it happen.
