Slade shakes his head slowly. “Nope. You shouldn’t take his photo to use it against him.”

“I was not,” she says defensively.

“Sure you were. You should be resting anyway and not worrying about what Tucker will or will not be doing.”

I deleted the mugshot and erased the message while these two were going at it, but she won’t know that for a while.

I should be offended with Sweetness’s warning. I mean, I don’t lurk, and I’m not hairy. I don’t wear a furry skin sweater, but I’ll admit my facial hair is slightly unkempt now, and my hair is longer.

“You wound my heart, Sweetness.” Fair enough, I haven’t kept up my manscaping because I have been undercover these past couple of months guarding a female against an evil motherfucker. The last thing I needed was anyone recognizing me after playing the charity event with Hudson Raine not that long ago.

“Phone, please.” She holds her hand out.

“Nope. With a couple of seconds of warning, I could have beamed a smile for you, but alas, I must now confiscate your phone for verbally assaulting my character in a text.” I walk over to the tallboy and pretend to put it inside the top drawer, but instead, I pocket the phone.

Slade lets out a groan of annoyance. He doesn’t waste his words on me, knowing my cocky knows no bounds, choosing to aim them at his woman. His hands rest on his hips. “Firebird, you are not to worry about what Tucker gets up to. He can go annoy Ophelia for all I care—”

Oh, how these two are out of the loop.

“—I have not as yet had the pleasure of getting introduced to her, but if she is anything like you, then if he is stupid enough to chase her, then good luck to him!” Slade’s grouchy has Phoenix’s full attention.

I turn my back on them, walking over to the open door, using the steps I’m taking to slip Phoenix’s phone from my pocket. I send Ophelia’s contact details from her cell phone to my phone—which is in the back pocket of my jeans—just as a happy snap comes through on Phoenix’s phone.

Neither of them notices the ping. It only goes to show how off her game Sweetness is in her current medical state, and Slade is far too invested in Phoenix to pay attention to me to notice what I am up to.

A selfie of a stunning blonde grinning back at me wearing black thick-framed glasses gives my heart a jolt. I’d know that smile anywhere. Ophelia looks like a secretary wet dream.

Is my woman now blonde?

The accompanying message asks how Phoenix feels and lets me/Phoenix know she is on a surveillance job at a café in Solana Beach.

Well, lookie at that—here’s your sign. It’s as though fate wants me to find Ophelia right now.

I tap out a response from Phoenix throwing in her sarcasm about Slade. When you’ve lived under the same roof for over two months with Sweetness, you get to know her sass quite well.

I won’t be wasting any more time like these two are with each other.

Ophelia’s mine.

Today’s the day we move forward.

An animal-like growl interrupts my thoughts where I have completely zoned out, still hovering by the open bedroom door. I look over my shoulder. The big guy and Sweetness are still word-sparring with each other.

“… now, I’m going to be getting in this bed with you and sleeping. Do I need to cuff our ankles together while I get some shut-eye? Yes or no, Firebird?”Well, that’s a step in the right direction.

“Um…No?” Phoenix sounds like she isn’t sure if that was the correct answer.Maybe she does like a little kink.In her condition, a fly could take her on.

“Right answer, Firebird, and in your current medical state…” Slade wisely doesn’t finish that sentence off.

“What are you insinuating, Slade?”Oh, girl, you just keep poking the bear.

“Tucker could take you on!” Slade snaps out.

Oh, here they go, bringing me into it.

I ignore that jibe from the man-mountain, slipping the cell phone back on the bed with Phoenix none the wiser.

Yeah…naah.I need to clear something up. It’s time to save face. “Big guy, that story you heard about me getting laid out by Sweetness…. well, I let Phoenix nail me to the floor, in full view of all your male and female friends and my fellow band members because a gentleman doesn’t tackle a chick.”
