Ophelia

It appears I have gotten duped into thebest breakfasteverbecause we are pulling up into the private two-car garage of an expensive contemporary townhouse on the Redondo Beach Esplanade—not a café.

Or was it merely an assumption on my behalf?

“Let me hazard a guess. Is this your home, Tucker?” The rumble of the Harley silences.

“You are spot on, Hamlet.” He offers no more information about why we are here, and I ignore that he is still calling me Hamlet and Shakespeare.

I throw my leg over the bike and busy myself taking the helmet off while he does the same.

I place my hair up in a high ponytail, all the while wondering why he has brought me here instead of what I assumed would be a café.

“If you don’t mind standing here for a moment…” He doesn’t finish the sentence, he just hits the button on a remote, and the garage door glides down and then types on his phone.

“Look, Tucker, I think we—”

Both hands fly up in the air in front of my face. “Hold that thought, Shakespeare, you are about to meet my two sisters.”

“Wait. What?”

“Be ready for the best hug from Alice.”

A bell goes off behind me, and Tucker’s face lights up. He spins me around, placing his hand on my lower back to guide me toward a door that is sliding open. An elevator?

“What…?” Before I can get anything else out, a tall, gorgeous, leggy strawberry blonde walks out of the elevator wearing white jeans and a pretty red off-the-shoulder top, smiling at the both of us. Her skin is like porcelain. The resemblance to Tucker is obvious.

“Hello, I’m Teagan, Tucker’s twin sister.” She extends her hand, and I accept it.

“Hello, I’m Ophelia.” The warmth in her greeting puts me at ease. She’s lovely, and she looks like she was expecting me. How odd?

“Lovely to meet you.”

My eyes follow her as she gives Tucker a quick hug.

“Teagan, we seem to be missing somebody,” he says a little too loudly.

“Why, brother, I think you are correct.” The two of them are hamming it up.

“Did you forget someone, Teagan?” he says like he is in a pantomime, his movements and voice exaggerated. Animated.

“Hmmm,” Teagan rubs her chin like she’s thinking, “I wonder where—”

“Tuucker!” A sweet female voice squeals in delight.

My eyes get drawn to the open elevator.

“You might want to stand out of the way for this,” Teagan offers, gently grasping my elbow, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.

I heed her words and step over beside her.

“Did you hear my name, Teagan?”

“I did,” she laughs at her twin.

Tucker cups a hand to his ear. “Sounds like my big sister.”

Teagan rolls her eyes at me. I note she’s allowed to get away with it.
