“What if we get back to that place and it’s worse?”

“Gotta take some risks. Gamble if you ever want to win big.” He waggled his brows at her, and she rolled her eyes.

“Or you could have looked at a map and booked a place ahead of time.”

“That’s terribly boring, and you know it.”

“If I’m sleeping in some parking lot in the car tonight, you’re going to have to listen to me complain.”

“It’s fast becoming one of my favorite sounds,” he teased. “Though nothing compared to you screaming my name in that back seat.”

“I haven’t had sex in the back seat of a car in a long time. I can’t believe we did that.” She looked at him as he packed up their things. He felt her eyes on him and knew she had more to say. “I haven’t felt that way in a long time. Like I couldn’t wait another second.”

“Yeah,” he said coolly, understanding exactly what she meant. “I’ve been feeling that way for about three weeks. I was waiting for you to catch up.”

“You take a little longer to grow on people, I guess.”

“And it takes a long time to forget me. Trust me. When this is all done, and you’re supposed to be boarding that plane to Portland, you’ll be begging me to come along.”

“Bullshit,” she shot back, straightening her back and tipping her chin up proudly. “I don’t beg anyone for anything.”

“You were begging a bit in that back seat.”

She blushed, and he took the opportunity to pull her into his arms and kiss his way up her neck until she moaned. “But you won’t ever have to ask me twice. You say the word, and I’ll do anything you want. Anywhere you want it.”

She slid her hand up the back of his shirt and dug her nails into his skin. He was hard and ready for her. It would take no more than a minute to get her undressed and slide deep inside her again. But the light bulb in the dirty halogen fixture above their heads suddenly flickered and burnt out with a pop that sent her yelping in fear.

“What the hell?” she asked, clutching him tightly and looking up.

“Time to go,” he said, kissing her neck one more time. “We gambled on this place and lost. You gotta know when to fold ‘em. Let’s go.”

“We need to fold on this food too,” she said, sliding the cartons into the trash. “I was only pretending it was edible for your sake.”

“You’re not mad?” he asked, looking for any sign of her freaking out.

“Not at all.” She shrugged. “Shockingly, things aren’t going to plan, and the world hasn’t ended. It’s still spinning. But I am going to eat my granola bar.”

“Completely understandable.”

“If you’re good, I’ll give you one too.”

“What if I’m bad?”

“I’ll have to find a way to punish you,” she teased, leaning in for another kiss as the sparks between them began to fly again. But the banging of the pipes in the wall broke them up.

“I’m out of here,” Cleo said, grabbing his hand and tugging him along. Little did she know, she didn’t have to pull him along. He’d follow her anywhere.

“Now I’m a little mad,” she said as his phone rang. “The sun isn’t even up yet.” Stretching her back, she shifted in the reclined front seat of the car.

“I blew this,” he said with a sheepish smile. “I really thought we’d be able to find a place to stay on the fly.”

“I knew all along we’d be sleeping in the car. My supplies don’t seem so silly now, do they?”

“You have earned anI told you so.” He cleared his throat and squinted at the screen of his ringing phone. “It’s Carter.”
