Chapter 4

Xander

Despite the threat of the high warlock hanging over our head, I slept heavily and well, wrapped around my mate and with the heat generated from the other two men keeping the bedroom nice and cozy for us all.

It was surprising how quickly we’d all adapted to sleeping in the same bed. Maybe the fated mate bond made that part of things easier.

When we woke up, it was a procession of people through the showers once more, a simple breakfast of anything we could find in the fridge or freezer, then dressed for the day.

Monique and Michael seemed to have an endless supply of clothes inside their magic Mary-Poppins-type suitcases.

Once we were all ready, we headed into town.

“What’s the population of this place?” Michael asked, walking alongside me and staring around with interest.

I pressed my lips together. “Not sure. I’d have to ask my parents, but last time I checked it roughly about two hundred and fifty people.”

Tiny compared to a normal-sized town, but for a wolf pack we were a good size. The only problem up to this point had been that we were mostly a male population.

Monique laughed as a young boy bolted around her, almost toppling her over. “Lots of children everywhere.”

“Yeah. All boys. As you can see.” I gestured to the people walking on the street and going about their day.

Monique looked over at a group of pack members who had congregated in front of the local bakery. They ranged in age from young toddlers all the way up to my age. They were all male.

“Your sister was the last female born to the pack, wasn’t she?” Monique asked.

I nodded. “Yes.”

“And she’s... what? Thirty-one? Ish?”

“Yep.”

Monique ran her hands through her hair, whisking it up into a bun on the top of her head and wrapping it all up with an elastic that she grabbed off her wrist. “That’s a lot of testosterone.”

Michael snorted. “Thirty years’ worth.”

I sighed. “Too true.”

My dad walked toward us, an uneasy smile on his face. “Hey Xander. The council want to have a town meeting this morning. Are you available now to debrief them?”

He phrased the words like it was a question, but I heard the command in his tone. “Yeah. I suppose I have to be, right?”

“Good,” my father said, ignoring my faintly snarky remark. “Bring everyone.” He smiled at Monique who stood beside me. “The council wants to meet our two new pack members.”

I snorted, which got me a dark look from my father. “Oh, come on, Dad. The wolves are suspicious of anyone magical, and you know it. In fact, some of them harbor outright hatred toward witches and warlocks, so please don’t pretend it’s in our best interest to put Monique and Michael on the stage and present them to the pack.”

My dad sighed. “You want them in your family, Xander. So, you’ve gotta deal with the consequences.”

I narrowed my gaze. “It’s fated, Dad. Not a choice. Not about my wants or needs. It just is. You know how the fated mates bond works. Which means, you know how much Monique—andMichael—now mean to me and Kyle. If anyone has a problem with that... they’ll need to deal with me.”

I didn’t break eye contact with my father, but Monique’s hand slipped into mine and squeezed lightly.

“We don’t want to cause any trouble,” she said in a tiny voice.
