Chapter 7

Xander

Over the next few days, I was pulled into more pack meetings than I ever had been before. The council was in full damage-control mode. They didn’t want anyone leaving the pack in search of their mate, especially not when I told them what had happened with the high warlock.

“So you’re telling us that wolf blood is some sort of... energizer for dark magic?” my dad asked at one meeting.

I tilted my head, wishing I’d brought Michael with me. He would have been able to answer the questions so much easier than I could. But I’d tried to include him once, and that hadn’t turned out so well. Half the shifters had burst into wolves with Michael’s continued presence and the rest just sat there and scowled at him.

“I don’t know exactly,” I answered truthfully. “All I know is that he took our blood, used it in some dark magic spell and Michael said it was driving his father insane.”

The council members groaned and growled in response.

“So it’s not safe for any of us now.” The Alpha shook his head. “I’ll stay in the pack grounds until this is all sorted out.”

“You’re not heading out again?” Dad asked him.

The Alpha shook his head. “No. It’s time I deal with the curse once and for all.” He stared at me in a challenging way.

Did he know that his death may be the only way to break the curse?

It was likely he did, but if not, I wasn’t going to be the one to tell him, not today.

“Kell and Tommy want to go north, look for another coven,” one of the elders said, speaking of his sons. “They want a mate, and a family.” He turned and glared at me.

My anger began to stir. “Why are you glaring at me like that? Like I’ve done something wrong? Our women—my sister—almostdiedtrying to give the pack daughters. Daughters she would never have because of a curse that happened before I was even born.”

I got to my feet and clenched my hands into tight fists. “I should be glaring at all of you!” I stared around at the council members, one at a time. “Our pack isdyingand you’ve all stood around and done nothing, fordecades! Well, I’m not going to let that happen. I found my mate, and once I’ve dealt with the high warlock, I’m going to find a way to break the curse and save our pack.”

It was on the tip of my tongue to add, “Like you should have done,” when I stared at the Alpha, but luckily, I managed to hold the words in at the last moment. But he got the message, I was sure of it.

So did all the others.

I took another moment to glare, and at least some of them had the decency to look away, ashamed.

When my dad stood up and began to cajole me, “Xander...”

“No, Dad. Even you!Youknew and yet you did nothing. Mikaela...” I shook my head. “You should have told us, long ago.”

I turned around and walked out, not wanting to spend another second in the presence of the men who’d run our pack into the ground.

I was angry and shaking, my teeth grinding together so hard I could hear the enamel cracking. I couldn’t stay in human form any longer. I needed to run. Now.

I took off toward home, shaking with the stress of holding in my wolf. When I got to the cottage, Kyle was on the porch with a huge glass of water, sweat covering his face.

“Hey man. You up for helping out at the new house or... What’s wrong?”

I stripped off my clothes, throwing them down onto the porch.
