Chapter 10.

Michael.

Knowing Monique was pregnant, changed everything. I was never going to leave her now, even if staying in the pack made me miserable. That baby was mine, no matter who had biologically fathered them.

I wouldn’t leave Monique, nor would I encourage her to leave the pack to travel now. She would need women around her, family. And even though Xander’s mom hadn’t stepped up to help yet, I was hopeful she would once Monique’s pregnancy became known.

Xander arrived home after dinner, again. He stepped into the room with an exaggerated sigh, and grumbled out a welcome to us all.

“Hey. I’m just gonna clean up.” He moved towards the bathroom, but Monique jumped to her feet to stop him.

She was wringing her hands, anxious, but needing to talk to him. “I have some news for you. Can I tell you now? Or do you want a shower first?”

Xander stared at our mate and there was a strange sort of detachment in his face that I’d never seen before. “Is it important... or...?”

“Ah yeah, it is.”

I rolled my eyes and made a scoffing noise. Was he serious? Would she really be standing in front of him and his angry, man mountain, if it wasn’t important?

Xander turned and pinned me with a glare. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Me?” I repeated with another scoff and got to my feet. “What’s wrong with you! You’re the one who just walked in here like a fucking black cloud. As if you’re the one that gets to be pissed off. You’re out there, living your Alpha life while Monique and I are stuck in limbo, waiting for your pack to decide if they’ll tolerate us or not.”

Xander marched over to me, stinking of sweat and annoyance. “If you’re not happy here Michael, you can leave. You can always go, nothings holding you here.”

I narrowed my eyes at him and stuck the barb in. “Oh, you mean other than my wife?”My pregnant wife.“You think I’d leave her here? God knows what would happen to her with Kyle working all day and you doing god knows what.”

Xander’s eyes widened and his nostrils flared. “No-one in this pack would hurt my mate.”

“They’ve already hurt her!” I ground out, pointing to Monique. “They shun her and belittle her, and despite the alleged fated mates bullshit, no-one gives her the time of day. Not even your mom, let alone your sister. Have we even met the infamous Mikayla yet?”

Xander’s hands tightened into fists and I drew what little magic I had into me, ready to respond in kind. This asshole had dragged us back to his pack with promises of safety, of family. Instead, all we’d been dealt was a shitty hand.

Xander growled at me, his teeth shifting into the pointed canines of his wolf.

I clenched my teeth and growled back. “You don’t fucking intimidate me. If you wanna pull that kind of crap, go do it to the wolves out there.”

Xander didn’t respond, instead he marched straight through the ‘spare’ bedroom, into the bathroom, and slammed both doors.

Monique sighed and said to the room, “I’m pregnant. Aren’t you glad? No? Didn’t think so.”

I squeezed the bridge of my nose where a headache was building. I needed to stop focusing on how crap I felt, and focus on her. “I’m sorry sweetheart.”
