I stand in the alley behind Bruno Stepanov’s house. From the exterior, it looks fairly unassuming, far less decorative than the grand facade facing the main street out front. There are lines of windows, but from this angle, Bruno’s building could be mistaken for an apartment building holding several units.

The shine of bright red hair glows from a window looking into a staircase. I see a woman being followed by a man much larger and covered in tattoos, throwing a jacket on as he descends the back stairs. Just as they disappear from view, a midnight blue Rolls Royce pulls directly behind the building. A valet exits the driver's side.

I point my handgun at the valet, watching the whites in his eyes grow in shock.

“Now is a good time to run,” I say as I tip my head towards the end of the alley.

The driver does as I say and bolts down the alley, disappearing around a corner.

I lower myself into the back seat, waiting for Bruno Stepanov and his companion. Their voices grow louder as they come closer. From the sounds of it, they’re arguing.

“You are not to take such actions without my approval,” Bruno barks at his companion. “If I want Tatyana dead, it will be my decision, not yours.”

I clench my teeth as my hand drifts into my pocket and pulls out the gift I have for Bruno. The blade of his father’s dagger shines from the cleaning I gave it this morning. The green eye at the end of the hilt is polished, ready to look upon the vengeance I’m ready to deal to the Stepanov family.

“I should be your wife! Not some little slut who isn’t even a virgin anymore,” the woman says in a bratty tone as she tears open the passenger door and throws herself into the seat. “If she died at the surgeon’s office, it would be an easy excuse. You wouldn’t need to worry about getting rid of her body.”

I wait and listen, confused as to why Tatyana was taken to surgery.

“I did this for you!” the woman shouts.

The car lowers as Bruno’s body rests into his seat. “Bullshit,” he says with a laugh. “You’re a jealous little slut,” he says, glaring at her.

“Of course I want you for myself,” the woman says in a pouty tone.

I raise myself from the back seat, hooking the blade of Boris Stepanov’s knife into Bruno’s throat. “That’s too bad, darling,” I say as I aim the point of Boris Stepanov’s knife at Bruno’s chest, just as Boris did to my brother. I pull hard, plunging the blade inside Bruno’s torso until the hilt of the knife sits flush against his skin. The woman braces herself against the car door in shock. “Thank your father for this,” I say as Bruno’s body convulses as he spits mouthfuls of blood. He tries to reach back towards me, but his hands fall against the backrest of his seat.

The woman with Bruno tries to scream but can’t find her voice. She fumbles at the door handle until I raise a gun at her.

“I don’t like killing people unless I have to. Don’t give me a reason.”

Her hands fall off the door, and she freezes still, looking at me.

“You’re going to tell me where Tatyana is.”

“She might not be alive anymore,” the young woman protests.

I raise my gun, pressing the barrel into her head. “If she’s dead, I promise you will be too.”

She tries to whimper, but I grab her hair and yank her against the headrest.

“Where is she?” I growl.

“Gold Coast Day Surgery,” the woman stammers.

I get out of the back seat and pull Bruno’s body out of the driver’s seat. Leaving his corpse to rot in an alley is a death he deserves. I sink down into the driver’s seat and look towards the woman.

“Get out of the car, but don’t think I won’t hunt you down if Tatyana is dead. You will suffer the same fate she does.”

The woman pulls the door open and falls backwards onto the alley ground. She picks herself up and looks at me one more time. “Let Tatyana know I’m sorry,” she says in a pathetic voice.

“If she’s alive, you better be sure you aren’t in town,” I say to her. “I may not kill you, but I make no promises for Tatyana.”

Chapter25

TATYANA

People undergoing surgery will occasionally wake up in the middle of their procedure, mentally conscious but unable to alert anyone they’ve woken up.
