CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Daniel stood in his office looking out across Central Park, waiting for his father to arrive. He had one hand in his pocket and the other holding his phone.

He stared at the screen.

I should text her.

Every time Daniel thought about what to say, it sounded wrong. It sounded like bullshit. Much of what had happened with the extortion, he could never share with Harper, but he knew he’d have to trust her with some information to buy back her trust.

All of which he could only do in person, not over the phone.

Daniel trusted Harper to keep the information confidential, but for her safety, there was only so much he would tell her.

Daniel hoped like hell she would give him an opportunity to explain and give him a chance.

Another one.

He wasn’t a religious man, but for the first time in his life, talking to God was on the tip of his tongue.

Nothing made sense now he was home, and Harper wasn’t in his arms anymore. Yes, his family and the business were important, but there was room in his life for the woman he loved.

Dufort Hotels was a part of him. One part. The other was a man who loved Harper Kane with everything he was.

He was going to move mountains to win her back.

“Why aren’t you answering my calls?” His father’s angry voice broke through his thoughts.

Daniel pocketed his phone and turned.

“Please sit,” Daniel said, pushing a whisky across the meeting table at his father, and sitting down in his own chair. He was greeted with an angry stare for a few minutes, but Daniel ignored it, tipping his glass to his lips.

“What is this all about?”

Even though a fire burned within him, Daniel felt some sadness about what he was about to say. God knows this had never been in his long-term life plan.

“As of two hours ago, you’re no longer president of Dufort Hotels,” Daniel said calmly.

“What the hell are you talking about?” his father growled.

“We called an emergency board meeting, and your absence was noted.”

His father stood, fury pouring off him.

“Wha—are you joking? You’ve run a coup?!” Johnathan Dufort yelled.

Daniel tossed his drink back and slammed it on the table. “No, Father, I did what was necessary to remove the greatest risk to this company. You! I did my fucking job.”

He stood, walked to the side cabinet, and poured another whisky.

“What the hell are you talking about, Daniel?”

Daniel turned and pointed at him with the cut crystal glass. “I cleaned up your goddamn mess with Mackenzie and Suzanne. I took my fucking life back. One you were quite happy to bargain with to save your own ass,” his voice raised.

Jonathan waved his arm around as he paced. “I was being blackmailed. What would you have had me do? Anyway, this is my damn company. You can’t kick me out, son.”

Not anymore.

“It hasn’t been yours for a long time. Not since you listed, and certainly not when you did fuck all to find a solution to our little problem. Did you even try? Or did you know this entire time this was payback for being caught with his wife?”
