CHAPTER TWENTY

Harper climbed out of bed and slipped into the bathroom. She had no idea what time it was, nor where her handbag had ended up.

When they had returned home to Daniel's penthouse—they took turns at staying in each other’s rooms—they had been quick to fall into bed.

As Daniel slept quietly, she tiptoed out into the kitchen area, looking for a bottle of water. All this champagne she’d been having was dehydrating her. She was going to make a point of having some alcohol-free days.

Fortunately, today she wasn’t meeting with BookFlix until after lunch, and then tomorrow morning the team was flying home to California. That meant she could spend more time with Daniel if he wasn’t working.

What’s the damn time?

She saw Daniel’s phone on the table and walked up to it. One press of the button and his screen would light up, telling her the time. She just wanted to know how much more time she had to sleep or whether to wake him and enjoy more of his body. Like him, she just couldn’t get enough.

Harper clicked the button on the side of the iPhone and saw it was five in the morning.

He also had a text message.

She tried really hard not to look at it, but one word jumped off the screen and struck her right in the chest.

Then her heart.

It was from Johnathan Dufort, Daniel's father.

Your engagement announcement is tentatively set for the 25 February.

Engagement. What the fuck? Daniel was engaged?

Nausea rose in her throat, and she went running into the bathroom, reaching the toilet just in time. She threw up.

Daniel was engaged?

She’d been sharing a bed, and every other surface in the penthouse, with another woman’s fiancé.

His words came crashing back.

“Harper, if I could, I would love you forever.”
