CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Daniel sat staring at his phone for about an hour after Harper had stormed out.

Fury unlike he’d ever experienced ran through his blood and yet all he could do was sit and stare.

He’d lost Harper.

He knew she’d never forgive him, and he couldn’t tell her what was going on. He couldn’t tell anyone what was happening with the Mackenzie extortion. So there was nothing he could say to make this better.

Fucking nothing.

––––––––

EVENTUALLY, DANIEL had fallen asleep with his head lolled back on the sofa. Now he had a throbbing head and a dry throat.

What a fuckup.

He hated the senator more now that his actions had hurt Harper. Fuck the blackmail and fuck the extortion.

He was mad with Harper for not letting him explain, and mad with himself for not saying anything. But there was nothing he could say.

He was the CEO and owner of a billion dollar business, and they were being extorted. It wasn’t something he could share with some girl he met in Hawaii. Whether or not he wanted to admit it, that was all Harper was.

He had to put his feelings aside and start being responsible. He had thousands of employees around the world who relied on him running this organization and ensuring they thrived. Unless Black Hawke Security found a loophole for them, Daniel would marry the Senator's daughter.

Harper would return to her life. Hate him. They’d miss each other, then forget each other.

Right?

Except that wasn’t how it felt. He’d hurt her. And that hurt him. But Daniel couldn’t blame anyone else but himself.

Well, except fucking Mackenzie.

Fuck!

He couldn’t just leave the islands without talking to Harper. Somehow, he had to tell her as much of the truth as he could without putting the Dufort Dynasty at risk.

He knew Harper well enough to know she’d be very upset and wouldn’t speak to him. But Daniel wasn’t above using evil tactics to reach her.

––––––––

DANIEL STEPPED INTO the conference room minutes before four o’clock.

“Good afternoon, everyone,” he said, nodding to all the BookFlix faces. “I’m sorry for the intrusion. Ms. Kane, do you mind if I have a word?”

Harper glared at him, and he noticed her slightly pink eyes. He clenched his jaw, wanting to punch the damn wall.

“Actually, we are just in the middle of wrapping up. Can we speak later?”

Which loosely translated to over your dead body, asshole. He’d seen the look before.

“No. This is urgent,” he said, using his CEO voice.

Harper glared at him. The room went silent around them. She swallowed and stood. “Well. If you will excuse me, please,” she said, collecting her laptop and bag.

“Let’s wrap up. We can finish these last pieces on the plane,” Denise said, and he gave the woman a smile.

Harper glared at him as he led her to a side room and locked the door.
