When he didn’t hear Fletch give their brother shit back, he frowned. He looked up and instead he was giving Hunter the bird while munching on his pizza, but there was something up with him.

Olivia cleared her throat uncomfortably. “What I would consider, Mr. Dufort, is the day you actually get engaged. You and the future Mrs. Dufort—your fiancée—will have to deal with the previous broken engagement, though fake, being mentioned over and over.”

Hunter snorted. “Dan’s never getting married. None of us are.”

Olivia shot him a questioning look, then glanced at Fletcher, who shrugged.

What the hell was up between those two? Daniel watched them for a moment but was distracted by the image in his mind, which wouldn’t disappear.

Harper with a ring on her finger, dealing with the New York media on what should be the happiest days of her life. Even though he’d lost her, Daniel found he still held the tiniest string of hope, which helped form his decision.

“Stall them,” he instructed.

“Yes, sir,” she said, nodding and stood.

“I’ll see you home,” Fletcher said, stuffing his phone and wallet in his pockets. “Later.”

He watched Olivia pack up her things and throw her bag over her arm. She politely said goodbye and then glanced at Fletcher, who placed his hand nearly in the small of her back. He stopped himself and then walked her out of the room.

When he heard the door close, Daniel stretched out his legs and stared at his little brother. “Want to tell me what the fuck is going on between those two?”

“Nope,” Hunter said, all leave me out of it.

Daniel shook his head. “Fuck me, I don’t have time for this right now.”

It went against Dufort company policy for any of the executive team to be romantically (read: have sex with) involved with staff.

Daniel had created the new policy when he became CEO two years earlier. The HR team had spent decades cleaning up after their father’s, and other leaders, unethical behavior. With new employment laws, it was the right thing to do. Daniel would speak to Fletcher once this Mackenzie debacle was all over.

He fucking hoped it would be over.

Right now, Daniel needed to get down to Central Park to meet Josh Hawke.

“Go home. Get some sleep,” he told Hunter. “I suspect tomorrow is going to be a huge day.”
