CHAPTER ONE

Fletcher stood at thefront of the room in his luxury triplex penthouse and stared out at the hundred or so guests. Behind all the bow ties and cocktail dresses, the lights of Manhattan skyscrapers twinkled brightly.

“To Daniel and Harper,” he said, lifting his Waterford crystal glass half full of whiskey, finishing his toast to the newly engaged couple.

The crowd echoed his words, and the music resumed as his eldest brother scooped up his bride-to-be and planted his lips on hers.

This was now a common occurrence since Daniel had arrived back in New York a few weeks ago with the pretty New Zealander. The two lovebirds had met in Hawaii while Daniel was there on business.

Harper giggled, and then the two of them were surrounded by well-wishers. Above her head Daniel mouthedthanksto Fletch.

He gave his brother a mock salute and smiled.

Daniel hated all the attention, Harper even more so, but they loved each other. That was clear to everyone around them.

Fletcher liked Harper. She was sassy, strong, and had a huge heart. More importantly, she loved his big brother and didn’t let him get away with any of his dominating shit. Daniel needed someone strong, and he’d most certainly found that someone in Harper.

Whether that dynamic continued into the bedroom, he really didn’t want to know, but from the doe eyes he saw from Harper every time she looked at Daniel, he highly doubted it.

Fletcher accepted a fresh glass of whiskey from the waiter and made his way across the room. He’d offered to host the intimate engagement party at his apartment so the two could disappear when they wanted. Plus, he knew how private Daniel was about his personal space, and Harper was still settling in.

Not just to a new home and country, but a billionaire lifestyle.

While most people would roll their eyes at such a thought—and Fletcher had been born with a silver spoon in his mouth—he could still understand how much of a change it was for her.

Now she had a driver, personal security, and staff in her home most days.

Members of the media were desperate to know her so, when Harper refused to give any interviews, they’d done what they did best. Made it up.

Fletcher had completed his master’s in communications, and as the director of marketing and PR for Dufort Hotels, he knew the games the media played very well.

He’d sat down with Harper, along with his PR manager, Olivia Miller, to talk his soon-to-be sister-in-law through a handful of options.

In the end, she said she still didn’t want to talk to them.

To complicate matters, Harper was a romance author. The media was having a field day with that, but the upside was it gave her books more awareness in the public eye and sales were up, apparently.
