“Oh, my God,” Addison said, her hand flying to her chest. “You have to marry him.”

Olivia let out a watery laugh.

“Don’t be crazy. You know how insane Simon is. If I dared marry anyone, let alone the Manhattan Playboy Fletcher Dufort, it would set him on a path of destruction that’s not even worth contemplating.”

Addison shook her head.

“Look, he got away with lying and drugging you once. It doesn’t mean he’ll do it again. Perhaps you need to speak to the cops? Or a detective? Or, I don’t know... but he cannot keep you locked in fear like this. It’s unhealthy.”

Olivia stared across the room at her daughter, who was playing with a Barbie doll and half watching a show on the Disney channel. Sienna was changing her doll into a new outfit.

Such innocence. As it should be.

She knew she was hyper-alert to her ex-husband and probably overly concerned. That was how victims lived.

The first thought she had every morning was worrying about what he might do. She would try to find anything she may have done that could give Simon cause or an opportunity to mess with her.

To take Sammy from her.

“I know. But this is my life. I married him and these are the consequences,” she said.

“Do you love Fletcher?” her friend asked.

She dropped her face and began slowly shaking her head.

“It doesn’t matter. Even if I did, I can’t allow myself to go down that path or feel anything,” she replied.

Addison shook her head. “You’re just scared and trying to do this on your own. I think you should talk to him. Not Simon. Fletcher.”

Olivia couldn’t do that.

It had been nearly a week, and she missed him like crazy. If she heard his voice, she’d break. In any case, it was unlikely he would want to speak to her after the way they had ended things.

She had hurt him, and his goodbye had cut through her heart like a knife.

She had to let him go.
