I’d bet Georgia would have no trouble starting over if she were me. She was always the strongest and boldest of the two of us.

Like Aunt Grace-Ann, her mama, Georgia got away from the country life and headed for the big city to live out her dreams of working for herself.

I should have gone with her, but I did everything to please my mother.

So, when Mama found out I was pregnant and said I had to marry Kurt, I did.

She was never going to have a daughter living her life as a single parent the way Aunt Grace-Ann did when she had Georgia.

If I hadn’t married Kurt and chosen the single parent route, it would have made her look bad.

After all, at the time, Mama was the new preacher’s wife with a reputation to live up to. She would have damned me herself if I damaged her reputation by looking like some Jezebel.

To her, it was so much the better that Kurt was in love with me. I think he genuinely was and maybe still is. His parents also adored me, which is a huge part of why he wants me back.

As we approach the airport, I reach into my bag to check I have the right cash for the driver. That’s when I notice I don’t have my purse.

“Oh, God,” I rasp out, trying to backtrack when I last saw it.

I had it when I was packing my things.

No, it was before that. I was still in Nick’s room.

I must have left it there.

I tap on the driver’s seat to get his attention. “I’m so sorry. I left my purse back at the hotel. Can we turn around, please?”

“Of course. Will you still be able to make your flight?”

“Yes, I’m early, and I shouldn’t take too long in the hotel.”

Unless I see Nick again.

I could call him and ask if he’s seen my purse, but I don’t want to be the weird woman and call so soon after getting his number. He might regret giving it to me.

He’s probably already left, too.

But… if not, and I do see him when I get there, that might be nice.

ChapterSeven

Nick

“Massimo, I’m going to head to L.A. in a little while,” I say into my phone, balancing it between my shoulder and ear as I pack my things. “My flight is in two hours. I just have a few more things to wrap up.”

Tennessee left her purse here. I’m going to see if there’s anything with her address inside and send it to her.

I set it down on the coffee table and walk into the bedroom to gather the rest of my stuff.

“That’s fine,” he replies in that stern voice he’s known for. “Check in once you get back. I want everyone on this. It’s gone on for far too long.”

“Agreed, boss. Just give me a little more time, and I’ll eliminate the threat.”

“Alright, Nick. Just get it done.”

He hangs up, and I curse myself. This shit has gone on long enough, and something still feels off.

I open the wardrobe door, and out comes one mean-looking motherfucker with a long-reach knife.
