I don’t even know if he got shot. If he didn’t, then I don’t believe for one second he’s just going to let me go.

What do I do now?

Where do I go?

Shit.

ChapterNine

Nick

“Fuck, damn it.”

She’s gone. I rush out to the lobby, unable to find her anywhere.

Did I seriously expect her to stick around?

She probably got into the first taxi and hightailed it out of here.

Shit.

What the fuck do I do now?

People are looking at me as I make my way through the area and walk outside the building. I look up and down the road, but there really is no point.

If I could have talked to her, I would have been able to explain what happened. That’s if she listened to me.

And I’m making things worse. Right now, I have two dead bodies upstairs that I can’t just leave there.

I call the concierge to tell him to keep people away from the tenth floor, then I call the clean-up crew.

* * *

“They were waiting for you,” Leo states, looking over Mario’s dead body.

We’re at the vet the cleanup crew uses to dispose of bodies. I wanted to check out Mario first before we roast him. The other guy didn’t have anything on him, and it’s not looking like Mario had anything either.

“Which means they were watching me,” I answer.

Leo dips his head, and his messy hair falls over his eyes. “They were fucking watching you, and they wanted to take you out.”

I knew something was off. This was it. I fell into my own trap.

I’ve just reported to Massimo, and of course, I haven’t told either him or Leo about Tennessee.

As far as either of them are concerned, she doesn’t exist.

While I can maybe contain things at the hotel, I can’t control what she does outside it. Like if she goes to the cops.

One mention of my name, and it won’t just be cops involved. It would be feds, too. Maybe even more than that.

The worst thing for anyone in the mafia is to have cops crawling all over your ass. If cops start asking questions, that will get back to the hotel, and they’re not going to like that either. It shakes the foundation of what we in the underground keep secret.

“What now?” Leo asks.

“We need more eyes. It wouldn’t have just been two of them. Go back to the hotel and question security. See what you can find out.”

“Sure.” He nods and leaves.
