How do I keep quiet about that?

It goes against my morals to even think I can forget what I saw.

I need to go to the police and report the crime, but I need to do it in a way that doesn’t track back to me.

While I want to do what’s right, I don’t want to put my face out there to be some kind of hero and end up getting backlash for it. Or die.

That could happen, and it might not be Nick who kills me.

Clearly, that man wasn’t exactly a saint either. I heard his threats and what he said about Nick’s father. He made it sound like he had other people who would come.

Nick snapped after that.

Shit. I shouldn’t have gotten involved with him. I should have listened to my gut and turned him down at the table before he could even open his mouth.

I’ve been through so much. Things are already bad as it is and unsteady in my life.

Even before Kurt screwed with me, I had Mama, and I still have her breathing down my neck to take him back. She actually told me he was the best thing to happen to me, and it was my fault he cheated.

Eight months ago, when I walked in on Mary riding his cock in his office, it was confirmation to my heart that he was the worst thing to happen to me.

Last Friday, when the divorce papers came through, mere days before I was scheduled to leave Wilmington, Kurt came to the house to cause a scene. He didn’t know I was leaving town, and since I got to keep the house in the divorce settlement, he thought that’s where I was going to keep living.

Georgia grabs my hand, making me jump. I almost fall off my chair.

“What is with you?” she giggles. “You’ve been spaced out since you got back.”

I release a haggard sigh. “Sorry, I think I’m tired.”

She gives me a saucy smile. “Of course, you would be, after the weekend you had.”

“You’re not going to let me forget about that anytime soon, are you?” I try to sound normal, but there’s a slight quiver in my voice.

“Nope. It’s so much the better that it happened to you. Can you imagine what your mama would say if she ever found out?” She gives me her best villain laugh.

It makes me smile. I actually can’t think of what my mother would do. She’d probably fly me over to the Pope himself and get him to dip me in the Red Sea to cleanse my sins.

“Well, I know she wouldn’t just have a fit.”

“No, ma’am, she would not. Have you heard from her?”

“Of course, I have. She’s been calling, but I don’t answer the phone.” The same phone I left in Vegas. I’ll at least wait a week before I get a new phone and number.

“Maybe silence is best for a while.”

“I know it is.”

“Alrighty, Miss Lady, we’ve got work to do. I’m going to town to see that new boutique I wanted to order those cupcake holders from.”

“Is it okay if I work from home today? I mean, if the girls are in and everything can run without me.”

She nods. “Yes, absolutely. After the magic you worked last week, you can do anything you want.”

I wouldn’t call it magic. I’m just good with business. I took some community college classes in marketing and advertising. I always wanted my own business, and Georgia and I always had a knack for cooking and baking. We did the catering for all sorts of things back home and always talked about going into business together.

This was perfect. She had everything set up, and I just came along and became an addition.

“Thanks, Cuz.”
