“What the—? Grace?” I hear Ashley screech. “Grace, who is that? Are you okay?”

“She’s fine,” Rowan says. “And she’s staying with me tonight. You don’t have to worry. You have my address. She’ll call you tomorrow.”

He’s looking at me as he tells my friend what I’m going to do beforeIknow what I’m going to do. I scoff my slight outrage, but who am I kidding? I want to stay with him. Walking out of his house and assuming he was fine with parting ways hurt.

Hearing Ashley’s voice demanding to know what’s going on, I hold my hand out for the phone. It’s nice to know my friend isn’t just accepting that I’m okay because a stranger tells her I am. My new friend is more loyal to me than my family.

Rowan hands me the phone.

“Ashley, it’s okay. I’m fine.”

She sighs heavily. “Are you sure?”

“Positive. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Okay.” After a beat of silence, she says, “Hesoundshot.”

Fighting back a smile, I look skyward. “Bye, Ashley.”

Just as I hang up, I’m pulled into a searing, demanding kiss that steals my breath and the strength in my knees. “Now, get back inside, Grace,” Rowan commands, lips hovering over mine.

Instead of being annoyed as I probably should be, my breath hitches and my abdominal muscles clench. I’m already bending to his will. That tone he uses just does something to me every time. It’s demanding yet seductive. How does he pull it off?

Chapter 6

Rowan

Grace holds my gazefor a moment, long enough for me to think she’s going to protest. I almost let her leave. I sat staring into space after she walked out, thinking I should.

All along, I’ve been telling myself it’s best to stay away from her or at least keep her at arm’s length. That way, I’d avoid hurting her. If she walked away, I’d have nothing to feel guilty about. Weeks ago, I would have taken that easy out.

But I like Grace. She’s... different. Incredibly special. I revealed I’m a billionaire, and she didn’t bat an eyelash. She walked out after promising to reimburse me for everything. I couldn’t believe it. She’s one in a million.

Although only those close to me know my secret, in the past I’ve taken the chance and revealed a fraction of what I actually have to others. My experiments never ended well. So, I’ve had to keep a part of myself hidden.

Relief surges through me when she lets out a soft sigh and turns to head back up the walkway to my porch. I follow, hoping like hell I don’t ruin what’s between us before it properly takes off.
