It's funny but after only having the patch for the last fourteen hours, plans are falling into place nicely.

“She’ll have to show her face for sure, dealing with city officials and what not,” Zach says.

“Exactly. She’ll know it’s a hit. It would be too much of a coincidence not to be,” I say, and my brothers nod in agreement. “We’ll use Luca and the Dog’s Blood crew to get visuals for us. Zach and Slade can get the floor plans and what not and the rest of you, I want gathering weapons. This will be our first and lasting impression in the city.”

With nothing else to be said for today, I slam the gavel down and just like that, brothers leave with their orders, and I release a long breath.

“Like I knew you would, you did well, son.”

“Thanks, but don’t think I don’t know if you hadn’t had stepped down, you would’ve done something similar. You left dealing with her till I took over, didn’t you?”

“I had the exact same thought. I left her for you to deal with because jumping in the deep end will gain you their complete trust much faster. I saw it beginning just now. They’re seeing you think and act like a president. The club doesn’t need much, but one thing it will always need is complete faith in whoever leads them.” He grins. “Besides, you’re a Jackson. You don’t know how to fail.”

He pushes up out of his chair. “Come on, there’s some shit you need to get familiar with in the office since it’s yours now.”

I don’t blame my dad for waiting. I’m glad there’s something for me to get my teeth into. My first act as president will be to take out Effie Rathbone.

Chapter Six

Holly

Winding my window down, the wind cools the car down and I tuck my hair behind my ear. I should treat myself and get a newer car, but I can’t bring myself to dip into my savings when my car runs perfectly fine, just lacking all the modern accessories.

I park up on Main Street and grab the lunch hamper from the trunk before collecting Rayna from her seat and taking hold of her hand as we head for Kristen’s shop.

“Are you ready to see Grandma?” I ask Rayna when she tries tugging out of my hand.

She walks nicely beside me. “Yep, yep, yep.”

When Leo first hired me to watch Rayna, he made it clear Rayna needed regular contact with Kristen. Since I started dropping her off and picking her up, I realised Leo was relieved he got out of doing it.

The bell dings over our heads as I push the door open. Kristen’s face lights up having Rayna running toward her. She comes around the counter and picks her up.

“She wanted to have lunch with Grandma today,” I tell her and receive a lukewarm smile.

I know she doesn’t like me but because I don’t want Rayna to ever sense hostility, I pretend I don’t notice and keep a friendly smile plastered on my face.

I place the hamper on the counter and say, “I’ll see you at one.”

“Can you flip the sign over on your way out?”

No goodbyes, no thank yous, just flip the sign on my way out. I wave to Rayna and leave them to it, choosing to spend the next hour, eating my lunch at the diner.

Every time I walk in, I scan the tables for my parents. But in all the time I’ve been coming here, I’ve never seen them. I sit at a table in the back and dig out my phone. I scroll through Instagram till I give my order to the waitress—burger and fries with a diet Pepsi. It’s always the same.

While I wait, Zara and a couple of girls I’ve seen around the club walk in and perch their perfect asses at the counter.

None of them have to wear lace gloves. In fact, none of them wear much, showcasing their perfect bodies as they should, being happy with how they look.

Zara must feel me staring. She looks over her shoulder and smiles when she sees me and makes her way over. She slides into my booth opposite me and dumps her purse on the table.

“Where’s the kid?” she asks.

I’m immediately on edge. She knows Rayna’s name. She’s just being rude.

“She’s with Kristen.”

I note she looks happier today and I feel sick, thinking of the reasons as to why that would be.
