Rayna loves being with Victoria. I guess kids have a sixth sense when it comes to good people.

“Are you okay?”

Snapping back to reality, I see Rayna is running around chasing a butterfly and Victoria is staring at me.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Too much to drink last night I suppose.”

Her brows knit together. “Yeah, I hear bottled water is hardcore on the hangovers.”

Ouch. Caught in a lie.

“Sorry, but I am fine.”

“I’m a good listener if you want to talk.”

“I don’t even like hearing myself think. I wouldn’t impose on you to hear me out.”

“It wouldn’t be an imposition.”

Over her shoulder, I see Leo walk from the main house over toward the bar.

“Sorry, I’ve gotta go.”

I collect Rayna up in my arms and her cries for the butterfly fade to nothing. I need to get out of here so I can think.

In the bar, I’m zeroed in on Leo when I have to stop abruptly. Zara steps in front of me.

“Hey,” I murmur, hating meeting her eyes.

“I need to ask you something and I need the truth,” she says, and I nod.

If it means this is over with sooner because of it, she can have all the truth she likes.

“Is there something going on between you and Leo?” She keeps her voice quiet but just the words leaving her mouth while I’m holding Rayna is bad enough.

If she had asked me yesterday, I would’ve told her yes. But today, it’s the truth when I say, “Absolutely nothing. Why would you even ask?”

“I saw the way you were looking at him last night and there were a couple of times I saw him looking at you when you weren’t looking.”

That’s a load of bullshit if I ever heard it. He doesn’t look at me unless he has to. This is getting too messy, and I can’t cope with it.

“I don’t know what you think you saw, but it wasn’t anything. Can I go now?”

She steps to the side, and I make my way over to Leo. I plonk Rayna down on his lap, giving him no choice but to take her, not that he wouldn’t.

“You need to watch her. I have a check-up at the hospital, and I can’t take her with me.”

I don’t wait around for him to say anything. I walk out and focus on my car. I’m losing my damn mind, and everything is closing in on me.

I unlock the door but before I can open it, Leo’s spinning me around, the lines between his eyes deep with confusion.

“What was that with Zara?” is the first thing he asks, and it takes everything I have not to cry.

I’m so sick of fucking crying.

“She was asking if there was anything going on between us. Don’t worry, I told her there wasn’t and from now on, it’s the truth.”

He steps back and I take advantage to turn and open my door.
