“Yeah, your dad said you had said that. Why?”

“If something were to happen, you wouldn’t have any transport to get away.”

“Should I be expecting something to happen?”

“No, I’m just being cautious.”

I enjoy listening to her voice and then my daughter’s, and it’s only now I begin to relax.

Entering my cell, Mason is doing push-ups. His aggression is growing daily and no amount of phone calls with Pope is helping him. Poking my head out of the door, I clock Zach and Dex farther up the landing and jerk my chin.

It’s time I give my brother something he desperately needs. Out of the four of us, Mason’s a ticking time bomb.

Zach and Mason slowly move closer and stand outside the skinhead’s door. Over the last week, I’ve been monitoring the prick’s movements. He spends most of his time in his cell while his bunkmate spends most of his time playing dominoes down in the communal area. It’s twenty minutes before lights out and if this going to go down, it has to be now.

Zach nods once and I look over my shoulder. “Mase, you’ve got five minutes with the skinhead. Don’t make me come get you.”

He jumps up and slaps me on the shoulder. “Thanks, Prez.” He slips out of the door, and I crash on my bunk.

What a fucking day.

Chapter Twenty

Holly

Ihate the morning after talking to Leo the night before. He has this way of relaxing me with his voice and I always sleep better for it. But the next morning, his absence is heavier than ever. So today, I’ve filled my day so there’s no time left to think about the stuff that will never happen or the stuff that will.

I pull up outside Nina’s and kill the engine. I’m so thankful to have my car back and not rely on Cas or Alannah.

We’re spending the day with Sebastian and Nina. Grabbing Rayna’s backpack, the front door opens as we’re walking up the front path. My phone rings and I let go of Rayna’s hand to answer it.

“Holly? Is that you?”

Mom?

“It’s me.”

I don’t know what else to say. The last time we spoke was at my father’s funeral and that didn’t end well.

“I need you to help me.”

My first instinct is to recoil and save myself the impending drama and pain, but I find myself asking, “What do you need?”

Grief can change you. I’ve seen it so many times and one thing I know is crippling true about Leo. Maybe she regrets the way she acted, or maybe she doesn’t even remember.

“Can you come around?”

“Now?”

“If you can, that would be best.”

“Okay. I’ll be over soon.”

She ends the call and I slide my phone into my purse.

“Everything okay?” Nina asks.

“That was my mom. She wants me to go around. Do you mind watching Rayna while I see what she wants? I shouldn’t be long.”
