“Are you happy there? With the bikers?”

“I mainly stay at Leo’s cabin. I watch his little girl for him. You’d like her. She’s a sassy little thing.”

She gives me a weak smile and steps farther into the room.

“Do you want me to unpack your things?”

I know my answer instantly. “No. Maybe we can turn it into a fancy guest room. You always wanted one for when family came to stay.”

“What do you want to do with all these boxes? Put them in the attic?”

“Yeah, I’d like that. But I’ll have to ask a friend to help. There’s no way we’d be able to lug them up there.”

She nods and walks out. I follow her downstairs and a tear rolls down her cheek as she takes in the work I’ve spent all day doing.

“Thank you, Holly.”

“Of course.”

“Will you stay for dinner?”

I regret having to decline, hearing the hope in her voice.

“I can’t. I’m sorry. I have to get back to Rayna… the little girl I watch.”

“Oh… okay. It was just an idea.”

Not wanting her to sink any deeper than when I found her, I say, “I’ll bring her by tomorrow, if you like? We can stay for dinner then?”

She smiles, for what I’m sure is the first time since my father died.

“I’d like that.”

We say our goodbyes and as I’m starting the car, my phones rings. I don’t recognise the number and my heart races, hoping it’s Leo.

It is.

I accept the call from the prison and sigh with relief when I hear his voice.

“Hey, to what do I owe the pleasure of hearing from you at this time?”

He never calls before six.

“Zach was just on the phone with Nina. She said she had Rayna because you had to go to your mom’s. I just wanna check everything’s okay?”

“She reached out this morning and said she needed me. I went round and she was a mess. I made her eat, shower, and then sleep. While she slept, I tidied the house. It was a mess, Leo… she’s a mess.”

“She didn’t say anything to upset you, did she?”

“Not exactly. But she wanted to know what happened to me. She said she and my dad had heard rumours.”

“What kind of rumours?”

“Just that I had been hurt and that the club was looking after me.”

But it wasn’t the club…hewas looking after me.

“Did she ask for details?”
