Page 78 of His End Game

“That kid that you’ve had us watching. Ford? He just told me Effie’s gonna be at a charity bash next month. Some benefit thing she’s hosting for poor kids.”

Getting my full attention, I ask, “And how does he know that?”

“’Cause his mom owns a catering company and was hired to cater the event.”

Dex pipes up, “How does he know we’re after her?”

“Because, brother, every fucker’s heard about it,” Mason says, climbing up onto his bunk.

“Can his word be trusted?” I ask.

“We’ll find out.”

Yeah, we will.

“Watch the door. I’ll call Luca.”

Dex fills the doorway, bracing his hands on the top of the doorframe and I retrieve our phone from inside a pot of rice. It’s not the best place to hide shit but we’re in prison. There’s nowhere that goes unnoticed.

Dialling Luca’s number, it doesn’t ring for long before he answers.

“Hello, brother.”

“Hey, I haven’t got long but I’ve got some info for you.”

“It’s about time.”

“Yeah, yeah. It might be bullshit, but Effie’s throwing a charity ball next month. It’s about all I know so check it out.”

“You want me to find out where a ball is being held with no details other than there is a ball next month?” He snorts.

“No, asshole. You can start with a Jennifer Hanson. She owns a catering company that’s been hired for said ball. Her son’s banged up in here and one of the guys I told you about.”

“That’s better than nothing. Okay, I’ll get on it.”

“Whatever you find, work with JJ and fill me in on our next visit.”

“Will do.”

I end the call and call Jay. I give him a heads-up about the ball and Effie.

“This has to be our shot. She can’t keep evading us forever,” he says, sounding tired.

“You good, brother?”

“Yeah, why?”

“You just don’t sound it.”

“Gunner kept us up last night. Brother, I’m no longer young enough for pulling all-nighters.”

I can imagine. Rayna was up most nights when she was a baby, but it wasn’t like I was getting much sleep. The ghost of her mother ruined my sleep.

“I’ve gotta go. Say hi to Harps for me.”

“Will do.”

I hang up and hide the secret phone. The boredom returns.
