As soon as the words leave me, I know I’ve messed up.

“I’ll never let her go.”

“I didn’t mean it like that. I know she’s a part of you, and Rayna, I—”

Walking out before I finish, he escapes upstairs, and I fall onto a chair at the table. I hang my head in my hands. I had one chance and I’ve blown it. All I wanted was to show him our path could be walked differently.

His boots hit the stairs and I listen to him jog down. I stand, moving to the doorway.

Carrying a holdall, he says, “I’m needed in Dog City for a couple of days. I’ll call Rayna in the morning and tell her myself.”

He opens the door and I follow him out onto the porch.

“You’re running, Leo. Stay and let’s sort this out.”

“I ain’t fuckin’ running and there’s nothing to sort out. You know where I stand, where I’ve always stood.”

Cutting him off, I snap. “Bullshit. Things between us have changed. You’ve changed. If you leave now, I won’t do this again.”

He stares at me for all of ten seconds before turning for his motorcycle.

“I didn’t know her, but I reckon she’d have wanted you to be happy again.”

He turns around, his eyes as dark as the night sky above us.

“You’re right… you didn’t know her. You know nothing.”

Shoving his arms through his backpack straps, he straddles his motorcycle and brings it life, his engine sounding as angry as its owner.

He doesn’t look back and I have my answer. My life in Willow’s Peak isn’t where I’m supposed to be.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Leo

Ifucked up. I should head home and fix this, yet I ride harder and faster. It’s not long before the lights of Dog City are on the horizon.

There are worse pains to feel than death. The pain on her face is everything I’ve spent the last couple of years trying to chase away for her. Now I’m the cause and I can’t think straight.

Luca isn’t expecting me, but he must see me outside his gates from the CCTV, because it’s not long before he’s walking out of his clubhouse and opening the side gates for me. I ride in and park up with him hot on my ass.

“I wasn’t aware you were riding out,” he says, lighting a cigarette.

“I wasn’t planning on it till I went home.”

“Right,” he drawls. “So you’ve fucked up and you’re gonna hide out here?”

“I ain’t hiding nowhere. I was gonna come and check out the place. I’m just doing it now rather than later.”

“Sure. You wanna drink? Perhaps a shot?”

“I’ll take the fuckin’ bottle.”

“It’s like that?”

I don’t answer. I follow him inside and dump my backpack on the floor by the bar. I take the stool at the end and Tor slides onto the one next to mine.

“Luca didn’t say you were coming.”
