“Thank you for looking after her.”

I desperately want to get out of here. Without trying to be rude, I swing the door open, and JJ gets the hint.

“I can’t wait to get you home, Mrs. Carter,” he whispers close to my ear, and I shudder.

He already has my bag in the trunk, and as soon as we’re out the door, he’s swinging me into his arms and kisses me. I’m so close to being home, with him, I could cry.

“I’ve missed you so much, babe,” he whispers into my mouth.

“Not as much as I’ve missed you.”

It’s true. Being away from him has been a torture I barely endured. With one last quick peck on my lips, he takes hold of my hand and walks me to the car. The twins and Zachery are leaning against their bikes, and Mason tips his chin and grins.

“Looking good, Harps.”

I laugh. “Feeling good.”

“That’s what I like to hear, sweetheart.”

Opening the door for me, JJ helps me inside, and leans in to kiss me again.

“You sure you’re feeling okay?” he asks, doubt flickering in his eyes.

“I wouldn’t lie. I’m good, babe.”

With a smile, he closes the door and speaks with the guys briefly before climbing in behind the wheel.

“Let’s get you home.” He starts the engine. “And by home, I mean the club.” His jaw tightens and I reach across and squeeze his thigh.

“The club is fine. It’s a part of our home.”

“You sure? I mean, you were adamant you didn’t feel safe there. I don’t want it to set you back or anything.”

“It won’t. My head is clear now. Anyway, I need to talk to Cas and apologise to Luca.”

“Only if you’re sure.”

“I am.”

He pulls away from the facility, and I sink into the seat, getting comfortable for the long drive home.

I always enjoy watching JJ drive. He commands the vehicle, and looks hot as fuck doing it.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. While they were checking the baby, they told me we’re having a boy.”

The brightest smile I’ve ever seen crosses his face. “I know. When I called to check on you, the receptionist mentioned it. She thought I knew.”

“I take it you’re happy about it?”

“More than. You?”

“More than.”

Deep down, from the moment I found out I was pregnant, I wished for a boy, but believed I was having a girl. I lucked out meeting Jay, but the women before me haven’t done so well. Not with men or careers. But having a boy, I envision him growing up strong like his daddy, protecting his family. A man like that needs a strong name.

“While I was getting better, I did a lot of reading. The library was shit, but there was this book on Norse mythology. What do you think of the name Gunner?”

“Hmm, Gunner…”
