“You should send a few brothers to help them. This is what we promised on your behalf.”

“Then call him back and let him know you’re on your way. Take JJ and Zachery with you…” Just then, Luca and Angel walk out of the bar, and whatever Angel is saying has my boy grinning. I dread to think what it could be to cause him such amusement, seeing as not many people can make him smile. “Take Luca and Angel with you as well.”

Nodding, he goes to dial Darius back, but I stop him.

“Push Luca to take the lead while you’re there, and push him hard. I want to see what he’s made of.”

“For what reason?”

“My own. Do as I ask.”

I start to walk off when he grabs my arm.

“What’s going on with you lately?”

I stare intently at my son. I could tell him what’s on my mind, but I want to see how he reacts when he thinks it’s not for any reason. If he knew my plans, it could sway his decisions.

“Keep me updated.”

The second he lets me go, I walk into the bar and order a beer.

I’m halfway through it when JJ walks in and takes a seat opposite of me.

“While I’m gone, will you keep an eye on Harper?”

The fact that he’s asking me this pains me. I deserve it, but he shouldn’t feel he needs to. It should go without saying.

“Sure. You shouldn’t be gone for long, but I’ll watch her.”

Leo walks over and informs me, “I’ve loaded the prospect’s van with enough guns to cover us and half the Dogs if need be.”

Luca comes over and joins us, taking the chair beside me. “Thank fuck Rudi isn’t coming this time. I still haven’t caught up on my sleep since our last ride out to Dog City.”

We all laugh, then Luca turns serious. “Tor has a check-up for her ears in a few days. If I’m not back by then, she needs brothers escorting her.”

“She might have to reschedule—”

“No, she has to attend. It’s important and needs to happen. Send the twins with her at least. I trust them with her in my place.”

Victoria getting her hearing back was the best news the club has had in years.

“Fine. We’ll figure it out.”

“We should get going. I told Darius we’d be there by nightfall.”

Leo leads the brothers out, and Sparky drops into his son’s vacated seat and slides me a beer. I gladly take it and take a long pull.

“The way these boys are with their old ladies, I’m surprised they didn’t kick up a fuss about leaving.”

I hear that. “At least it shows their loyalty for the club.”

If Luca had his way, he’d be with Victoria twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. And JJ is understandable at the moment, seeing as Harper’s only been home a few days and he’s worried about her. But this is what they need to learn. They need to trust in the rest of us to look out for them while they leave on club business.

“You think it’ll kick off in Dog City?” he asks.

“It doesn’t surprise me that Effie’s trying to lock down the streets. I expect the worst so we’re prepared.”

“They had enough shooters that I won’t worry about them not returning home.”
