I take in how Pope’s shoulders unwind the longer he works, and I’m happy to see my brother getting what he needs.

Dropping the boxcutter to the floor, he heads over to the table of tools and runs his fingers over each of them, then stops and picks up the eight-inch blade.

He moves across the basement with unusual grace and plunges the blade into the guy’s chest. His eyes widen, and after a few moments, we all watch as he takes his last breath.

His body falls forward and lands with a thud, his blood pooling across the floor.

Pope stares down at him for a long while, and none of the brothers make a move to leave until he does. Without a word, he finally heads up the stairs, leaving Mason and Myles to dispose of the body.

We all need a purpose in life, and I fear Pope will never be who he truly was ever again.

Chapter Fourteen

Sparky

The brothers are wound up. The spectacle down in the basement took the edge off, but the simmering frustrations are still lingering inside the club. Days are passing, but Effie has yet to retaliate, and it’s driving us crazy. And the Dead Rats are still circling the town like crows, waiting for a carcass to gnaw at.

Standing at the kitchen window, I stare out at Cas, sitting on the fallen tree trunk. I’ve always been able to read him pretty well, but not lately. Tides are always changing around here, but this is different. Whatever is coming for us is huge and irreversible, and it has my gut sinking every time I think about it. Considering it’s all the time, I don’t feel good.

Hearing footsteps come into the kitchen, I look over my shoulder to see Harper walking in and opening a bunch of cupboards. I can’t help but smile when I look down at her baby bump. My grandson is snug as a bug in there, growing stronger every day. A fucking grandson. Some days, I still don’t believe it. When she and JJ made it clear they weren’t going to have children, I was the one who held Bonnie as she privately wept. My old lady promised to support them regardless, but she grieved in silence for the grandchildren she’d never have. I hate to admit that it didn’t bother me. But now the tables have turned, and I’m looking forward to the newest addition to our family.

“How are you doing?” I ask her.

“Good, but I’m craving chips.”

She locates a bag hidden behind a box of dried pasta, and her smile at her find makes me laugh.

Moving to stand beside me, she looks out to see what’s got my attention.

“He’s been out there for hours,” I murmur.

“He told me about his plans to build houses here on the property. He’s probably thinking about that.”

Houses? Just another thing I didn’t know.

“Where’s Jay?”

“Over in the bar with Angel and the twins.”

A prospect rushes into the kitchen, and I instinctively put myself in front of Harper.

“What is it?”

“I thought you should know the police scanners have been quiet for the last hour.”

“That’s it?”

I relax, shrugging off the need to punch him in the face.

“I mean, there’s beennothing.”

He’s right to report it. That doesn’t sound good.

“Okay, keep monitoring it. Come find me if it doesn’t change, or if something comes up we need to know about.”

Nodding, he disappears back into the bar.

Frowning, Harper looks up at me. “What could that mean?”
