“Did you find a purse or phone? Sylvia didn’t have her purse with her when I found her at the gas station, and I didn’t find one in the other two bedrooms.”

“Which means the girls might not have made it back here from Mexico and are being held somewhere until they pass the drugs.”

She didn’t like the sound of that.

“Then why take Sylvia to Rick’s gas station?”

“Maybe they were driving by when she started to get sick.”

She thought of the truck forcing her off the road. “Then the other two women could have been with him the whole time. They must be terrified.”

“Since it was the same truck you saw this morning, they have to be close by.”

She paused, staring at him. “How do you know it’s the same truck?”

“I looked at the surveillance footage.”

“And? Did you get a license plate?”

“No, but I saw Aiden in the passenger’s seat.”

She sucked in a breath, faintly surprised he told her.

“I know what it looks like.”

“That your brother tried to kill me?” Suddenly it felt as though the ground were tilting and her stomach lurched as the room spun for a moment. She collapsed to the bed.

“Listen, I agree, something very bad is going on here, but we can’t jump to conclusions. We have to follow the evidence.”

She glared at him. “I don’t think you need to tell me that.”

He grinned. “Probably not. Listen, you need to rest. Stay here while I search the rest of the house, then I’m taking you home.”

She was too tired to argue with him. “All right.” She lay back on the bed and instantly fell asleep. She had no idea how much time had passed when Chase was back in the room, shaking her shoulder.

She couldn’t believe she fell asleep.

“How long was I out?”

“Just a few minutes.”

She looked for a lie in his face, but couldn’t tell if he was being honest or not. She couldn’t read him anymore. She got to her feet and wobbled slightly. He quickly had his arm around her waist steadying her. She wanted to pull back, but couldn’t. After a moment, they walked slowly out of the room and down the stairs.

“Did you find anything else?” she asked as he relocked the front door behind them.

“Nothing. Though the house sure is clean considering five people live there. Too clean.”

“Do you think there’s a chance Aiden will return? There were a lot of clothes in the closet.”

“Hard to tell, but I’m going to assign one of my people to watch the house just in case.”

Surprised, she looked up at him. “You must have a lot of people working for you.”

“Enough.”

That was a vague answer. They got into his mother’s car.

“What does your business do?” She watched him closely.
