He took a deep breath and tried to find his patience. “Okay, I’m listening. Talk, and you better make it quick otherwise, Josh is on his way. What do you want?”

His brother stood. “For the last week, I’ve been trying desperately to keep Sylvia and Jacquie from getting killed—”

“So you said. From where I stand, you haven’t done a very good job,” Chase interrupted.

“Oh, you’d be surprised. I had to intervene with this one twice,” he gestured toward Jacquie. “I’m trying to convince her to get out of town, at least for a week or two.”

“I’m not running,” Jacquie said.

“I can’t guarantee they won’t succeed next try. Things are about to get real hairy around here.”

Next try?“Did you take her today in the woods?” Chase asked.

“No, but I lured Quentin away before he could finish what he had planned. He was real pissed to find you in the barn when he got back.”

“Quentin. That’s the guy in the hoodie? He was there?” Jacquie asked.

“Yes, we both were.”

Cold anger moved through Chase’s veins when he thought about how differently the day could have gone.

“What about Mom’s house? Did you do that too?”

Aiden scowled. “What about mom’s house? Are you talking about breaking your windshield? I was trying to send you a warning. I needed you to leave town. I still do. Both of you.”

“No, I don’t mean my windshield.” Chase sneered. “And I’m not going anywhere. I mean the trashing Mom’s house. She’s really shook up. You destroyed everything she had.”

Aiden looked surprised, then concerned. The flippant air suddenly disappeared. “When did that happen?”

“Right now. I just got done dropping her off at the inn when Jacquie called.”

“Ugh!” Aiden roared and punched the wall. He began stalking the room, pacing the length of it with his body coiled and tense.

Cash whinnied and back up in his stall.

“Shh, it’s okay,” Jacquie said, trying to calm the horse.

“Is Mom in danger?” Chase demanded.

Aiden spun toward him. “No. At least I don’t think she is. But thanks to you, she could be.”

“Thanks to me? That’s not a good enough answer,” Chase insisted.

“As soon as you started poking around, asking questions, Quentin started wondering who the hell you were and if we were related. I told him no, but obviously, he didn’t believe me. That’s why I needed you to go. This wasn’t about Mom, this was about me. He’s checking up on me. Was anything missing from the house?” Aiden asked.

“Who could tell? The place was destroyed.”

Aiden shook his head, still pacing. “Is Mom okay?”

“She’s pretty shook up. Why haven’t you gone to see her? She knows you’re in town.”

“Because I didn’t want anyone to link me to her, or to you.”

“Pretty hard to do that. People saw you with Sylvia.”

“I hate small towns,” Aiden snorted and scoffed.

“Why were you trying to hide who you are?” Jacquie asked.
