“Not yet.” He’s supposed to make an appearance tonight to pick up the shipment from Mexico.”

“Is the last girl okay?” Jacquie asked.

“She’s alive, but they’re not letting her go until the drugs are picked up.”

“Do you think they will?” she asked as she side-eyed him.

“Honestly? No. They’ve been working overtime to tie off the loose ends. That’s why they’re taking so many chances going after you and Sylvia. They’re closing this operation down and moving it to Georgia. Tonight is my last shot to get this guy, but if Quentin found that picture, then he’s on to me and my cover’s blown.”

“You’d be walking into a trap,” Chase said.

Aiden nodded.

“Then you need to lay low too,” Chase said.

“That’s not something I can afford. I’ve been working this case for too long to risk it all now. This is my last shot.”

“How can I help?” Chase asked.

“Wait,” Jacquie interrupted. “What happened at the hospital? You said you’d explain after Chase got here.”

“Quentin went back to finish Sylvia off. He blames her for everything that has gone wrong. He’s pissed, and he has a mean streak.”

“Then, how could you have let her get in with these guys?” she asked. “You said you cared about her. That you reached out to her. That you missed her.”

“Hey, she was already in up to her eyeballs. When she told me about Stephie, I asked to be put on the case.”

She stepped toward him. “So her going to Mexico would have helped you get the evidence you needed for your career and to hell with her safety.”

“It wasn’t like that. I couldn’t stop her. I begged her not to go to Mexico. Said it wouldn’t end well, that I’d find a different way, but she wouldn’t let her friends go alone. That’s just the kind of woman she is—brave, good-hearted, and someone who cares about her friends. A lot.”

“You still love her?” Chase asked.

“I do. I’m going to get Quentin for what he did to her. He enjoyed cutting her like that. He is the worst kind of monster.”

“So what now?” Jacquie asked. “What’s your plan?”

“Now we have to get the boss who started all this. Once we have him and Quentin in custody, everyone can breathe easier.”

“So, what do you need from me?” Chase asked.

“Backup.”

Jacquie shook her head. “No. Chase, I don’t think this is a good idea. You need to call Josh.”

“Josh,” Chase said, pulling out his phone. “He’s probably already on his way.”

“No,” Aiden snapped. “We can’t take that chance. It needs to be us. Only us. No police. The big boss always seems to know what’s going on in this town. He has to have an in somewhere.”

Jacquie shook her head. “I know everyone in the department. There is no way he has a mole.”

“Then it’s someone else. This is a small town with a lot of loose lips.”

“Well, that’s true,” Chase said. “All you have to do is go to Sunday service to get the low down on what is happening to everyone in this town.”

“Exactly. It’s real important that he doesn’t know we’re coming.”

Chase slipped his phone back in to his pocket. “All right. I’m in. Let’s move.”
