Maybe I should give her a chance. What if I miss out on someone great? Willow doesn’t feel the same way about me, so I need to stop comparing every other girl to her.

Ice cream was very non-committal. He could spend a little more time with Gabby just to see where things could go if he gave her a chance.

“Sure. That sounds fun.” Getting out of his chair, Asher shrugged back into his jacket.

“I actually live nearby.” Stepping out of the restaurant, Gabby ran her hands up and down her arms. “Would you mind if I ran home to get a long-sleeved top? It’s a little cooler than I thought it would be.”

“That’s no problem.” Asher gestured to his own jacket. “I can give you this one, if you’d like.”

She smiled at him, and Asher found himself smiling back. Gabby was pretty and easy to talk to, and he definitely liked her, but he didn’t think he could ever fall in love with her.

“That’s really kind of you, but don’t worry about it. Like I said, I live nearby. I’m actually only a two-minute walk from here.”

“Then, let’s go.” Asher opened his mouth to say something else just for a sneeze to tickle his nose. “Sorry.” He had sneezed a few times at the restaurant already.

Maybe I’m coming down with something.

“Bless you.” Gabby shot him a look of concern. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m absolutely fine. I don’t know why I keep sneezing. I don’t feel ill.”

“You don’t look it, either.” To his surprise, Gabby slipped her hand through his, linking arms with him. “I’d say you look pretty good.”

Asher shot her a surprised look, and Gabby shrugged her shoulders. “I’m not subtle. You’re pretty hot.”

“I…I appreciate that.”

Before he could say anything else, he sneezed three times in a row, to the point that they had to stop walking so that he could catch his breath.

Gabby let out a low whistle. “Maybe you’re coming down with something.”

“I really hope not. I don’t want to give you anything.”

“Hey, if it happens, it happens.” Another shrug lifted her shoulders. “It’s not like you realized you were ill and came here anyway.” Lifting her chin, she smiled. “Here we are.” Unhooking her arm from his, she pulled out a key from her bag and walked to the front door of the small house. “You can come in if you like or wait out here. Like I said, I won’t be long.”

“Thanks, I— Oh, hi.”

Something was winding itself around his ankles, and as Asher looked down, he realized it was a very small white cat. He didn’t bend down to pet it.

“Oh, that’s Biscuit. She’s real cute, huh?”

“Yeah, she is.”I’m going to have to change my pants when I get home.

“And if you look in the window, there’s Molly and Whiskers. They both get along great together, although they usually like to stay inside these days.”

Uh-oh.

“Three cats, huh? That’s a lot.”

Gabby unlocked the door. “I don’t have three. I have ten.”

Asher blinked. “Ten?”

She nodded and hurried inside, leaving him to stand on the porch step. There is no way this is going to work.

When Gabby came back with a sweater, Asher realized that she’d been telling him the names of all of her ten cats while she’d been inside.

“And Princess is my latest addition. She’s got the sweetest character, and her hair is so long, it’s just perfect!” Beaming at him as though he would think the very same thing, Gabby pulled the door shut, ready to lock it. “I mean, if I was honest, I would say she was a business expense, but I don’t treat her that way.”
