I pause, waiting to hear if Mrs. Herbert will call out a question or comment. She doesn’t speak to me, but still, her words garner all of my attention.

“So, what’s this talk, Paige?”

A shockwave quakes through my body, the wrench in my hand trembling with the force of it.

She’s here.

After over two weeks of silence, I’m mere feet away from Paige.

As I try to come to terms with this fact, Luna leans down enough to meet my stunned gaze, her eyes just as wide with shock.

Her mouth moves in one silent word:Paige?

I may not have clarified exactly how I know the Herberts.

I disregard my sister’s disbelief as I listen to the conversation between the tiny family. Briefly, I consider making my presence known. But both Mrs. And Mr. Herbert know I’m here. For some reason, they don’t feel the need to share that info with their daughter.

Quiet as I can, I roll out from under the car, listening.

I burst with pride as I hear her finally be honest with her parents about her need to stand on her own. My chest clenches when I think she’ll be moving to NYC, then loosens in relief at her declaring she’ll stay in NOLA. Shame heats my face when she says my name in obvious anger.

But none of those emotions compare to the level of shock that rockets through me when I hear exactly where her anger is rooted.

“He waited a week, or maybe not even that long, to jump into bed with another girl.”

What the hell?

“What happened?” Mrs. Herbert’s voice might as well be ice, and I wouldn’t blame her sudden rage if what Paige said was true.

“When I was in New York, I called him. Some random girl with a sexy voice named Luna picked up.”

My gaze locks on my sister, who suddenly finds it necessary to glare at her shoes. As my brain tries to catch up with this insane exchange, I miss a few words, but then Mrs. Herbert’s question, the same one shouting in my mind, rings loud and clear.

“You think Dash is sleeping with Luna?”

“Well, yeah. That’s what she told me.” Paige’s answer comes out in such a confused, devastated tone, it finally flushes energy back into my limbs. I drop my wrench and lurch into a standing position.

When I catch sight of Paige, every bit of me tightens and pulls towards her. Just her presence is magnetic, and when I notice the stray tear tracking down her cheek, I can’t handle even a car between us.

“You’re here. Why are you here?” Paige’s voice comes out panicked, and she backs away from me with her arms raised as I approach. I try not to let the reaction break me.

“I’m helping your mom out with some cars. Paige, what did Luna say to you?”

Saying my sister’s name was a mistake. Paige’s frantic eyes harden to stone, and she crosses her arms over her chest, shielding herself from me.

“I called to talk to you and got her instead. She made it clear you were indisposed. I guess I really am stupid when it comes to men.” As I watch some of the hatred in her eyes turn self-directed, I get the urge to wrap my hands around my sister’s throat.

“Luna! Get your ass out here!” I growl.

Paige stumbles back another step. “You brought your fuck buddy to my parents’ house?”

“No! God, no. Just let me explain.” I stalk over to where Luna is taking her sweet time standing up. Wrapping a firm grip around her arm, I drag her into the awkward confrontation. “Paige, this is Luna. Mysister.”

Paige’s wild eyes flit between the two of us, probably taking in the family resemblance. Leo may be her twin, but we still look a hell of a lot alike.

“Your sister? But she…”

Instead of apologizing, like a decent human being would do, Luna goes on the defensive. “To be fair, I never actually said that we were sleeping together. You came to that conclusion on your own.”
