But there’re so many different causes, I can’t figure out how to calm down. Paige’s description of their birthday gifts has me embarrassed that I ever doubted them. But her insistence that Cole chose to spend the day with me has my pulse all fluttery. Then Marianna’s comment brings the embarrassment back around.

Not that everyone thinks we slept together. But that everyone thinks we slept together when we haven’t.

Why didn’t we? I basically gift-wrapped myself for Cole, and he chose bagels. Over sex.

What’s up with that?

Does he…not want me like that?

My mind traces back to his truck. That was glorious and sexy.

And I’m the only one who got off.

But he was turned on.

Right?

It’s hard to think of him as a fuck buddy with no fucking.

“You want another drink?” The question pairs with a hand on my back, and I jump in my seat. Paige lets our fingers detangle, smiling over my shoulder at the man we were just discussing. “Everything okay?” Cole leans down to meet my eyes, probably thrown off by my reaction and my tomato complexion.

“Yes! Of course. Are you okay? How was the…bathroom?”

Cole’s lips twitch. “Fine.”

“That’s good. Hate it when you have a bad trip to the bathroom. Ruins the whole night.”

Dash snorts and Marianna raises her glass in a cheer.

“Drink?” he asks again.

“Yes. Please. Another beer would be great.”

He nods and heads off toward the bar.

Dash and Paige watch him again. They clearly think Cole is acting out of the ordinary. But I don’t know what normal is for him, so I have no means of measurement.

Questions rattle through my mind.

If I was someone else, I might let them fester.

But I’m a librarian. Finding answers to questions is my job.

Chapter Twenty-Six

COLE

“Why didn’t you get me naked on Tuesday? I mean, I was practicallybeggingfor it.”

My hands jerk, causing us to swerve in the lane. I’m quick to straighten us out again, but that doesn’t do anything to get rid of her words.

Shit, now I have to drive with the fantasy of Summer lying in my bed, completely bare, crowding my mind. I glance to the side to make sure she’s buckled in in case I rear-end someone.

“You didn’t beg,” I mutter.

“Do you want me to?”

Fucking hell.“Summer. Stop.”
