Just what in the actual fuck was happening?

“I’m not taking no for an answer, so don’t even try it on me.”

Bossy asshole.

I didn’t argue with him, because the sooner he left, the sooner I got my coffee, and that shit was life. There were some days where I never felt warm, and I would consume as many hot beverages as I could just to feel even an ounce of warmth on the inside.

And, just like that, at the thought of being cold, my nightmare slammed back into me.

My knees threatened to buckle, and my hands shook uncontrollably. I braced my feet farther apart and hid my hands behind my back so he would not notice. He missed my movements because he was too busy picking his boots up from the floor on the other side of the bed.

He left his trench coat on my chair as he strolled out of my room without so much as a backward glance. He didn’t expect me to argue with him, because I usually went out of my way to spend as much time with him as possible.

I didn’t argue with him this time because I needed him to getthe fuckout of my space before he could witness something that would embarrass me far more than him seeing me go through my nightmares ever would.

The moment the door closed behind him, I freaked the fuck out as I ran around the room, collecting everything I would need for a shower. It was the one place in this house where I knew I could go that Rain would not follow me.

The noise of the water helped drown out my sobs. I didn’t know how long I was in there for, but Rain didn’t once bother me. The cup of coffee sitting on my dresser when I got out was piping hot and told me it hadn’t been there for very long.

It wasn’t until then that I heard him drive off in Ariel’s Range Rover. He’d waited until I’d gotten out of my long shower to leave me.

It was times like that where I really wished he would stop doing those sweet things, because they made it really hard for me not to want him.

I got myself sorted after the shower and ready to face the day, though it took me a long time. By the time I was ready, I’d refilled my coffee cup twice, and Rain had returned with a chatty Baxter.

I watched cartoons with the kid and helped him with his homework from the makeshift magic school he took a couple of classes at in the house beside the Alexander house.

Rain acted like everything was normal and treated me the same as usual. Even throughout lunch.

But the way he looked at me had changed. As much as I might have liked it a day ago, today it set my teeth on edge.

Something big had changed for Rain, but I worried that maybe something even bigger had changed for me as well.

And that scared the shit out of me.

Unpredictable

Isobel

“Excuse me, miss? Is your name Isobel?” the delivery man who stood before my desk asked. “If so, I’m going to need you to sign for these.”

In his hands, he held a ginormous glass vase with a whole lot of pretty pink roses in it.

Pink.

Fucking.

Roses.

He sat the vase down on the desk and pulled a clipboard out from underneath his arm. He placed the clipboard on my desk, turned it toward me, and dropped a pen down on top of it.

All I could do was blink stupidly at him. Why was he here putting roses on my desk? I didn’t know this man.

I heard Rain’s laughter before I saw him. He stepped up beside my chair and picked up the clipboard.

“Congratulations, man. I think you’re the only person I know who’s ever been able to render her speechless.”
