Chapter Thirteen

“You should’ve called me sooner.” Steve’s voice snapped with controlled anger.

“Don’t involve me in your family’s discussions, please. I don’t want to be caught between you and your children. I’m just your nurse.”

“No, Lillian, you’re not just my nurse.”

A wave of hope unfurled in her heart.Yes, Steve…

Silence danced on the line, and she held her breath for the rest.

“You know you mean much more than a nurse to me.” That was all? He wouldn’t specify.

Much more than a nurse.

A nurse in love with him, offering him her body and soul on a silver platter.

Nerves tangled in her stomach. Would he tear her heart out when he lost interest?

Greg was right. She had to protect herself, both financially and emotionally.

“Don’t worry about my children, Lillian. The three of them answered my email within the hour, announcing they were coming to help their father in his time of need. I didn’t know Royce was already home. Glad you told me. Rather than react with anger or too much indulgence, I’ll have the whole day tomorrow to ponder my response.”

“I’m sure you’ll do the right thing. I’ll go back to my place after work and let you enjoy a private talk with your son.”

“Hmm… No. Not tomorrow.”

“Ah, are you postponing your return?”

“No, but with Royce at the house... Hmm… Lillian, can you pick me up from the airport tomorrow at six? I hope you won’t mind if I spend the night at your place. I miss you so much, sweetheart.”

Her head swam. “But Royce?”

“He’s waited five years to see me. One more day won’t hurt him. Better still, I’ll tell him I’m not coming home for another day. We need our privacy.”

Her pulse pounded in her chest, and her ears rang. “All right. I’ll be there at six.”

“I’ll give you a buzz as soon as I land. Goodnight. Go to sleep, sweetheart. I’ll be dreaming of you in my arms.”

“Ah …” Her heart knocked against her ribs. “Goodnight, Steve.”

How could she have doubted him? He’d just put her ahead of his children.

“Hi, Steve,” Lillian hollered through the open window of her SUV.

“Good to see you, sweetheart.” He slid into the passenger seat, threw his briefcase in the back, and cupped the base of her neck, drawing her head toward him.

She didn’t move, sharing and savoring the passion of a scorching kiss.

“You can’t believe how much I’ve missed you.”

Cars honked and a police officer strutted toward her car, signaling to move.

“You better go. The man has that nasty look, the precursor of his determination to give someone a ticket.” Steve laughed.

She didn’t need more urging and drove away.
