“How much do you want to bet Dr. Steve doesn’t survive the whole day alone with his son? Especially once Royce awakens?” Heidi commented, watching the car drive away.

Lillian chuckled. “I’m not crazy enough to take that bet. I agree.”

The rest of the day at the clinic went smoothly. It was just after four p.m. when Steve texted her.

Can you bring us something to eat?

Sure.

Why don’t you cook here? I’ll keep you company.

Okay.

I have a better idea. Bring sleepwear and plan to stay overnight.

Why? Couldn’t he handle another night?

He must have felt her hesitation.

Please, Lillian. I need you here to keep my sanity. He’s the worst patient I’ve ever seen.

Okay.

Good thing he couldn’t see her laughing.

Thank you, sweetheart. You’re the best.

She knew that. When would he stop asking for favors and start doing things for her instead? But she wasn’t really complaining. She enjoyed the fact that he found her indispensable.

After work, she did some grocery shopping, stopped by her house to fill her carryon, and drove to his house.

Steve received her with open arms. “You’re my angel of salvation. He can’t seem to understand he mustn’t touch his scar. He groans non-stop when he awakens. I can’t keep him drugged all the time, for heaven’s sake.”

“Why don’t you leave us, go for a ride while I cook?”

“You sure? I wouldn’t mind stopping by the clinic for a moment.”

“Go.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.” He gave her a searing kiss and left.

She went upstairs and found Royce half asleep on his bed.

“Dad, it hurts.”

“Your dad left.”

Royce opened his eyes. “Ms. Lillian, thank God you’re here. I need a pain killer. It hurts so much.”

“Try not to talk or laugh. When you do, you pull the cheek muscles and put pressure on the scar.”

“I’m hungry,” he mumbled, reminding her of the small boy he’d been.

“I’ll take care of you.”

She pulled his hair back into a ponytail and secured it with an elastic band, removed the bandage, rubbed the wound with anesthetic cream, then covered it with new gauze, and taped it closed.

“Better?”
