Chapter Twenty

“Today, you can work from home while I handle a few meetings.” Steve had already showered and donned khaki shorts and a beige golf shirt. That was considered smart casual attire on the island.

“Work from home, hmm.” She smiled, loving this boat and the island’s easy going pace. “All right, I’ll be ready in five minutes.”

Her yellow shorts and orange printed blouse would do well, with flip-flops and her new cap.

“How was your first night aboardMy Dream?”

“Heavenly.” She grinned.

“Let’s go to shore for a quick breakfast. Untie the boat, Mate.”

She laughed and obeyed. “Yes, Captain.”

Steve rowed in the direction of the docks and slid into a slip. She watched and learned as he tied his lines to the dock’s cleats, then jumped up onto the slipway.

“Out you get.” He held out a hand and helped her step up onto the dock. They slipped on their flip-flops and sprinted to the coffee shop.

“I want you to try different items from their breakfast menu every day. A sort of inspection on our part.”

“Their coffee is the best.”

Its smell had welcomed her the moment she’d entered the coffee shop. They ordered coffee and the manager recommended bagels with a fresh salmon spread.

“Unbelievable.” She licked her lips in approval. They each took coffee to go and returned to the dinghy and the yacht.

“Where’s your office going to be?” Steve asked.

“The lower deck. It’s close to the galley if I need water.” She took off her blouse and replaced it with her bikini bra. “I’ll double-task, reading and assessing the applications while I tan. Is that okay?”

He chuckled. “I love efficient employees.”

She sat in an armchair and set her laptop atop a table in front of her.

Steve snapped a picture. “This will remind you of the working conditions at your new job.”

She laughed. He kissed her and left to complete his business ashore.

An hour later, she sighed at the number of applicants and guzzled half her coffee to release the stress. How would she be able to read all these applications?

When Steve called at two announcing he would come and get her for a late lunch, she said, “I can’t stop now. Just bring me a crab salad. I still have too much to read.”

“How’s it going?” he asked when he’d returned to the yacht and placed a Styrofoam box with her salad in it on the table and sat across from her to eat his.

“I’ve read half of the applications and chosen seven to interview tomorrow. I’ve already contacted their references and called them to specify the time. Now, I want you to check them.”

“Okay.” He brought out his laptop and worked in front of her.

Appreciating their togetherness, she focused on her work once more, determined to transform this new endeavor into a success.

By six o’clock, she raised her head. “All right, I have ten interviews scheduled for tomorrow, five nurses, and five administrative assistants. I’ve come across resumes for three doctors’ all about to finish their residencies, too. Have you seen them?”

“Yes, can you set their interviews for the day after-tomorrow?”

“With you?”

“First with you, then with me. You’ll explain to them the work that’s expected, and then I’ll talk to them right after. It will give you a chance to assess their characters. Now, let’s go to dinner. This has been a long day. I’m taking you to a different restaurant tonight. They have the best fish on the island.”
