Prettier than ever, in her bikini and pink hat, Mia blushed, hugged her dad, and then went to hug her Mom and Matt.

“Without my parents’ love and Cody’s support, I wouldn’t have survived, but my biggest thanks goes to Dr. Matt who saved my life and my future. I’m lucky to have a father in Chicago and another in Cincinnati.” She raised her can of pop to one man and then to the other.

On the anniversary of their class reunion, Brenda donned a short, white lace dress, silver sandals, and stuck a white flower in her hair. Holding a bouquet of anemone, the Caribbean flowers, she arrived at the chapel in a horse-drawn carriage. Steve and Lillian waited for her, and Steve walked her down the aisle to her groom. In off-white pants and button-down shirt, Matt took his bride’s hand.

The local pastor started the ceremony, and prompted the bride and groom to exchange their vows.

Matt slid a diamond band onto her finger. “To the only woman I’ve ever truly loved and will love forever,” he whispered.

Brenda pushed a gold band onto his finger. “To the man who gave me faith in life and love. I will love you forever.”

They bowed their heads and received a wedding blessing from the pastor.

“You can kiss the bride.”

Never had those words sounded so wonderful to Matt’s ears. His heart bursting with joy, he kissed his bride.

Hand in hand, they sauntered down the aisle, took off their shoes, and ran onto the sand for memorable pictures and the start of a life of happiness.

Epilogue

A few days before Memorial Day, a whole group flew from Cincinnati to St. John for a vacation and several celebrations. Dr. Steve Winston, Matt’s father, and his wife Lillian, met them at the airport and lodged all his son’s guests at his hotel. Matt’s sister, Stephanie, arrived from Atlanta with her husband and small children. Matt’s cousins, Tyler and Tim Kent flew from Miami with their daredevil relative, Rafael Lopez, an accomplished pilot, who chartered a small plane to St. John.

The day after their arrival, Steve invited the whole group onto his yacht to sail around the island and discover its various beaches.

Matt lowered the dinghy and took Brenda and the Cramers on a rowing tour. Led by Royce, Mia, Cody, and a few others dove in the turquoise sea to snorkel. Lillian and Stephanie organized a fun luncheon on board when they all returned, burned by the sun, but joyful, noisy, and famished.

In the evening, Dr. Steve welcomed his guests to dinner in the restaurant across from the marina to celebrate Royce’s graduation with a master’s in engineering degree and an MBA, and Susan’s PhD in Education.

Oozing with pride, Steve announced, “Royce is the perfect example of the reformed black sheep, and Susan showed us that with imagination and determination you can help a lot of teenagers find their way. You two are an inspiration for the younger generation.”

On Memorial Day, Tyron Clark and Bill Cramer organized and catered a day-long party with a barbeque on the sand. They’d rented open mini-buses to transport their guests from the hotel to a secluded beach for another fun day.

After a long day of swimming and tanning, Tyron and Bill distributed cans of beer and pop.

“My friends, today we celebrate two special young people,” Bill started. “My son Cody and our lovely Mia. They both graduated with honors, and have been accepted at Northwestern University in Chicago on a one-year scholarship.”
