“Mom, before you get upset, let me explain.”
“You lied to them.”
“They kept asking why you didn’t come, why you didn’t call. And I really wanted to be on my own.”
“You made me look bad.”
“No, Mom, Ms. Chen admires you a lot. She won’t resent you for being busy. But they’re still evaluating me.”
Brenda sighed and swallowed her frustration to protect her daughter’s mental well-being. The sooner Mia got accepted into that friendly group the better.
At home, she asked for the paper, read it carefully, initialed it, and signed in the required places.
“There are a lot of regulations in these papers. Read them carefully, then sign and initial where I did.”
“Okay.” Mia went to her room.
Brenda fidgeted with her phone. Since Mia hadn’t wanted her to attend her meeting, she would have met with Matt. She hadn’t heard from him after cancelling their dinner for tonight and wondered if he was upset.
I have trouble keeping away from you.
His words gave her the courage to call. The phone rang several times and sent her to his voicemail.I may be in surgery now. Please leave a message.
She sighed, hesitated, and then responded, “Hi Matt. I miss you and just wanted to chat.”
She kept her phone next to her. But he didn’t call back.
