“That fast?” White lights burst behind her eyes, the hard, cold smack of his passion for another hitting her in the face.

“After a fairytale wedding and honeymoon, I faced a rude awakening. She was interested in her club, friends, clothes, and parties. I worked day and night in her dear daddy’s clinic, and her brother collected the fame and money, until the day I revolted and told Carl to go to hell.”

Hope and joy collided in Brenda’s chest. “You left her?”

“No, not my style. I got into a big fight with Carl in front of the whole staff. He fired me. At the time, we’d heard that my father was moving to the Caribbean. Cybil decided we should move into Dad’s mansion, and I’d replace him as head of his clinic. It didn’t happen. She left me saying she’ll come back when I’ll make a decent living. In the meantime, she met a wealthy businessman and sent me the divorce papers. It was such a relief.”

“You didn’t miss her?” Her brows shot up anxiously.

A muscle flicked angrily in his jaw. “I only missed the time I wasted working for her father. After that, I threw myself into my work again, but this time because I wanted to support my father’s clinic and regain his approval.”

“And now?” Her eyes flashed with worry.

“Now… You tell me Dr. Hammer. Am I a hopeless case, unable to attract the woman I want?”

A gasp escaped her. “Are you talking to the psychologist or to your friend?”

Slowly he raised himself on his elbows. “To the psychologist first. I’d like your professional opinion.”

“I’ll read my notes, analyze your explanations, and give my diagnosis at our next meeting.”

“Good. Can I schedule an appointment for tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow, same time.”

“And now, I’ll ask my friend Brenda. You heard my story. Are you still interested in dating me?”

Brenda’s radiant smile highlighted her response. “Yes, Matt. I ’d love to go out with you.”

Adrenaline coursed through Matt’s veins at warped speed. Why resist any longer? He threw his arms up, grabbed her by the waist, and pulled her down on top of him, burying his face against her neck, nuzzling and breathing her flowery perfume.

“Matt, are you crazy?” She protested, laughter in her voice, but she didn’t try to escape his hold. “This is my clinic.”

“I know. And I’ve missed you. We’re both so busy that we can’t seem to meet in the usual way.”

Taking charge with quiet assurance, he splayed a hand on her back and cupped her head with the other, bringing it down, her mouth hovering a breath away from his lips.

“Kiss me, Brenda.” His lips brushed hers as he spoke. “I miss you so much.” His last words were smothered against her mouth.

She parted her lips and his mouth captured hers hungrily in a drugging kiss.

A knock on the door startled them. In a swift motion, he pushed her away and jumped off the sofa helping her to her feet and keeping her hand in his as the door opened.

“Thank you, Dr. Hammer.” He shook her hand. “I really appreciate you seeing me on such short notice. When should I come back?”

Brenda sighed and slowly turned to the door.

“Maggie, can you give Dr. Winston an appointment?”

“I will. Your five o’clock canceled. We can go home now.”

“Great. I’m exhausted. See you soon Dr. Winston.”

She collected her jacket, her handbag, and locked her office.

Standing with the administrative assistant at the reception counter, he saw her heading to the hallway. In her black pants and white shirt, her hair pulled back, she represented the perfect attractive professional. Matt tossed her a sideways glance and texted her.
