She exhaled. “No, Matt. That’s the condition I insisted upon to keep Mia. He was already involved with someone I didn’t approve of. I didn’t want my daughter staying with them too often.”

Huffing, Matt considered her pensively. Was she regretting their fabulous time together? “Where do we go from here?”

“I hope we can see each other again soon. Unless you don’t want to.” Her voice broke miserably.

“I’d like to be with you every day, but you just—”

“We’ll have to be discreet, that’s all. I’d prefer that Mia and anyone around her, not be aware of our relationship. In July, she’ll be spending a week with her father, visiting the Grand Canyon. I don’t want the truth slipping out—that her mom is seeing someone.”

“If that’s what it takes to have you in my life, so be it. But she’s already seen us together at the picnic.”

“Yes, and she encouraged me to date you.” Brenda opened her arms in desperation. “I said we didn’t have the time nor the inclination for a commitment.”

“All right. When do I see you again? Apparently, you have a full schedule tomorrow evening, and then I’m working overnight.”

“Maybe on Saturday? Mia stays at her party from five to ten. But you work, right?”

“I will free myself up on Saturdays. Now, we both need sustenance for the coming days.”

He eased her down on the sofa for a second round, and slid next to her, flesh against flesh. Too primed for long foreplay, he grazed her earlobe, planted tantalizing kisses between her breasts, and rolled her on top of him.

Returning his kisses with reckless abandon, she straddled him and responded with her own brand of seduction, caressing and massaging his thighs and the hardness poking at her belly.

“Just a second, babe.” Swiftly, he slid on the condom and lifted her, slowly lowering her to sheathe his erection.

Desire pounded the blood through his body as she glided up and down, moved and gyrated, panting, and moaning. He flipped her over under him and regained control, thrusting inside her, his passion growing stronger.

Her body vibrated under his hands and lips, and his own thoughts fragmented as they convulsed together and collapsed exhausted, she gripping his shoulders, he squeezing her back.

“Matt…”

“Babe…”

“I’m afraid I’m falling in love.”

“That’s the sweetest thing I’ve heard in a long time. I’ll be here for you anytime.”

“We should get dressed and leave.”

Without a word, they collected their clothes and made themselves presentable again. “Where are you parked, Matt?”

“In the next street. There were no spots available in the parking lot.”

She switched off the light in her consultation room, locked every door behind them, and they rode the elevator together. “You exit at the lobby. Ignore the security guard. I’ll continue to the underground garage.”

“Call me from home. I want to make sure you arrived safe and sound.”

“Thank you, Matt. I can get used to have you worrying about us.”

He pulled her against him for a quick and deep kiss before the elevator stopped at the lobby.

Lying on his bed in his trunks, Matt sipped a Manhattan on the rocks, staring at the dark sky through the bay window of his bedroom. Brenda had sent him the briefest message an hour ago.

K

A whole message in the one letter. She and Mia had arrived home, but she couldn’t call him yet. Grabbing a throw pillow, he hugged it, visualizing Brenda’s soft body in his arms, on his lap, lying on the sofa, welcoming his lovemaking. She’d been responsive without being aggressive, tender and transparent in her loving demonstrations, and eager to continue their budding relationship.
