He dropped her at the university’s garage entrance. “Text me when you get home.”

“I will.” Knowing that he cared about her safety filled her with joy and relief.

Five minutes later, Mia sauntered over to her SUV and jumped in.

“How was your evening?” Brenda asked automatically.

“Fabulous. You know, Mom, I think Cody likes me—I mean really likes me. Maybe he’ll ask me to be his girlfriend soon.”

“Too early, Mia. Be careful. Two weeks ago, you were crying because your classmate Alex hadn’t invited you to his party.”

“Alex is an absolute jerk. You were right to tell me to stay away from him. I’ll be the one ignoring him from now on.”

Brenda glanced at her pretty girl. Too young to get caught in a sentimental web. “Enjoy your Youth Club, but don’t talk about it at school.”

Some of her classmates were real bullies who’d hurt her often.

Mia spent the rest of the drive detailing her evening, and Brenda relaxed. For a change, life was smiling down on both of them.

As soon as she parked in her garage, Mia jumped out of the car, and Brenda texted Matt.

To protect her privacy, she avoided long texts and deleted all threads right away.

Once in her room, she changed and settled into bed with her tablet, studying her notes from Matt’s interview in her office. She caught herself shaking her head often. His former wife was an absolute idiot. What a blessing for Brenda.
