Chapter Ten

Waking next to the man she loved, after another round of lovemaking and an unforgettable night in his arms, was a dream Brenda had never dared imagine. Relishing their time together, she remained tucked in the secure haven of his embrace, her head pillowed on his chest. He’d taken his time to worship her with his hands and lips, caress, massage, and kiss her for hours, changing his speed and care until she climaxed, and he’d followed.

Her true hero had trusted her with his past, with his emotions and feelings, and hadn’t been afraid to bare his soul. He’d let her savor their time together and made her feel he truly cared about her.

Vowing she would never let him go, she pressed her lips to his chest.

“Good morning, sunshine.” He stirred and moved her on top of him.

“Morning, Matt.” She raised herself to look into his eyes. “Did you sleep as well as I did?”

“The best night’s sleep of my life.” He kissed the tip of her nose. “We’re both off work today, but it’s your day. What would you like to do?”

Spend it with you, of course.

“Do you have any special suggestions?”

“Several… We can stay in bed all day. Or go to my condo and swim in the pool. Or do something new, like having lunch on the Riverfront, go sightseeing in a riverboat, stroll in Eden Park, and have dinner in Mount Adam...”

“Can I pickall of the above?”

“Seriously? You sure you don’t mind going out in public with me, being seen by someone who knows you or your daughter?”

“Positive. You’ve become Mia’s hero from the minute you threw that last picnic for her and her friends. Okay, let’s get ready. I’ll use Mia’s bathroom. You can use mine.”

“First, let me say good morning the proper way.”

He squeezed her to him for a long searing kiss and eased her away.

Half an hour later, she joined him in the kitchen basking in the invigorating smell of freshly brewed coffee. In khaki shorts and a navy blue t-shirt, Matt poured two cups of coffee and handed her one.

“Are toasted bagels with cream cheese okay?”

“Perfect.” They didn’t linger over breakfast.

With a pair of leggings and a light jacket rolled and stuffed into her handbag, she was ready to spend the whole day out.

And what a day it turned out to be… The weather cooperated and allowed them a quick Cincinnati chili lunch at an open air cafe, followed by a fabulous cruise on the Ohio River, where they discovered the Covington historical sites on the Kentucky side from the comfort of the upper deck. Matt fulfilled herall of the abovewish, driving her over to Mount Adam for a leisurely stroll through Eden Park and a dinner at a small and picturesque pub overlooking the Ohio River.

They returned home and collapsed onto her bed for a round of lovemaking. She slept in his arms, convinced that her most daring dreams or plans wouldn’t satisfy her as much as her oneday in paradise.

He’d warned her he would have to leave early to go home and change into his scrubs for a new day at work. In fact, she heard him moving around while it was still dark.

“Matt?” She knew he had to be at the hospital at seven for a scheduled surgery.

“I have to leave, babe. It’s already six. I’ll pick you up after work. We sleep at my place tonight?”

“Sure.”

She’d decided to be flexible and try to please him as much as he pleased her.

The week went by much too quickly. Alternating evenings and nights between her house and his condo, they made time to swim at his place twice after sunset, sit on her porch for drinks, dine and guzzle beer at the nearby brewery, mostly chatting and laughing like two people in love.

After her vacation with her father, Mia would spend one week at home before Brenda drove her to summer camp where, for the next two months, she would work as a counselor for a group of six or seven-year old girls.

“We’ll have two months together. Maybe we can plan a special vacation,” Brenda suggested.

“How about a few days on the beach?”
