“Dad said he hopes he can meet you the next time he’s in Cincinnati.”

“No way,” Brenda blurted.

“Really, Mom. Dad is much nicer than you give him credit for.”

The blood drained from Brenda’s face.

His heart aching for her, Matt rushed Mia into the backseat and gently rubbed Brenda’s arm. “It’s okay. Don’t worry,” he whispered.

Mia kept up her exuberant tone all the way to the restaurant.

When they arrived, the hostess greeted them and asked them to follow her. Immediately, Mia protested. “We want to be seated in the small room at the end, the one with a view of Mount Adam.”

“The gentleman requested a view of the river.”

“I hate the river. I want the view of Mount Adam,” Mia insisted, her eyebrows scrunched, pouting like a child.

The hostess turned to Matt. He glanced at Mia.

“Please, Dr. Matt. I really, really like Mount Adam.”

“Since when?” Brenda snapped.

“All right, would you have a table there?” he asked the hostess.

“Sure.”

They followed her.

Only a few tables were occupied. Mia pointed to the wall with windows. “Over there, please?”

Matt followed her, his eyes widening. “I’ll be damned,” he muttered under his breath as he noticed the teenager craning his neck at the table also occupied by two adults and a little girl.

“Aren’t these the Cramers?” Brenda frowned.

“I think so,” Mia said, with a satisfied smile. “What a coincidence!”

Both Matt and Brenda spun toward her.

Brenda fumed. “A coincidence?” she muttered. “I doubt that.”

“Hi, Dr. Hammer.” Cindy Cramer waved, and her husband Bill stood to greet them.

“Amazing, Mia and her mother are here,” Cody’s little sister exclaimed.

“What a coincidence,” Cody answered.

Both he and Mia had trouble repressing their nervous giggles.

Cody stepped closer to his father.

Mia approached Matt. “Please, Dr. Matt, can we sit with them? Please, please, bring our table closer. I’m leaving tomorrow. I won’t see Cody for two months.”

He narrowed his eyes. “I would have expected you to be more honest. I thought you trusted me.”

“I do. I’m sorry. I was afraid Mom would say no.”

Matt shook hands with Bill Cramer.
