“How can I manage that when I’m stuck in surgery?” He laughed. “Don’t worry about me. I make up for it later when I’m hungry.”

This big boy needed a feminine presence in his life to watch over him.

“One more year,”she muttered under her breath.

In a year, they would be able to marry and live together, not just for a week here or there, but permanently.

“What’s wrong, Brenda? You’re suddenly too serious.”

“Nothing in particular.” Anxiety dampened her thoughts. She cleared her throat. “I was wondering if we’ll be able to repeat this trip next year.”

“I don’t see why not? We’re getting along famously. No reason we can’t do it. No reason to change anything in our lives. You know what they say,If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

“I think they’re calling our plane.” Matt guzzled the rest of his pop, and they headed to the gate.

Inside the plane, he shoved their luggage into the overhead compartment.

“Window or aisle?”

“I prefer aisle.” It made it easier for her to take a quick break to the lavatory.

“All right.” He slid into his seat, buckled his seatbelt, and closed his eyes. A minute later, he’d drifted to sleep, his head lolling against her shoulder.

She looped her arm around his neck to give him a comfortable support and smiled. For the next two months, Mia would be at camp, and Brenda would love to take care of her man.
