Brenda rolled her eyes, and Matt chuckled.

“I finish my club meetings at six on Wednesdays. Maybe you could invite Dr. Matt for dinner here. We need to get to know each other better. Or he can take us out? What do you say, Dr. Matt?”

“I’m all for it, Mia. I’ll make sure Wednesday and Saturday remain free on my schedule. Brenda, don’t you think it’s a fabulous idea?”

“Huh… Yeah.”

Brenda seemed to be having trouble collecting her thoughts.

“By the way, Cody gave me great news. He got his driver’s license.”

“Oh God,” Brenda muttered.

“So he doesn’t need a ride. Unfortunately, his parents don’t want him driving friends around for a few more weeks, not until he acquires more experience.”

“Wise decision.” Brenda released a huff. “I’ll drive you over to the condo.”

“In a few days, I’ll download the Driver’s Manual and begin studying the rules of the road. Dad promised to teach me when he comes.”

Brenda’s jaw dropped. “What do you mean? When is he coming?”

“He wants to have a family Christmas. He’ll spend one or two weeks here at the end of December. He’ll be here for my seventeenth birthday.”

“Ah.” Obviously, Brenda had trouble digesting this news all at once. “When… When did he decide this?”

“We talked about it in Colorado, and then he wrote to me at camp and confirmed.” Her tone a bit aggressive, Mia narrowed her eyes. “Is there a problem?”

“Not at all,” her mother said. “I’m sure he’ll eventually notify me of his plans.”

“He’s very busy. You know how it is. You’re often busy, too.”

“Yes, I know.” Her frustration tangible, Brenda nibbled the corner of her lip.

After dinner, Mia cleared the table with them and declared. “I’m going to my room. I have a lot to do. Night, Mom. Night, Dr. Matt. Thanks for tomorrow. It’s my last week before school resumes. I want to make the best of it.”

“Of course, good night.” Her mom hugged her, and Matt followed suit. “Welcome back home, sweetie.”

They watched Mia dash to her room, and he swallowed a chuckle, guessing at Brenda’s mixed feelings.

“I’ll say goodnight too.” He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. “I’m learning from you. Parenting a sixteen-year old needs all the patience in the world.”

She smiled sheepishly. “It has its good moments though. Don’t forget you’re coming for dinner next Wednesday”

“Looking forward to it. I’ll call you. We’ll make time for ourselves, too.”
