“Yes, and left voicemail, but…but there are numbers here that I don’t recognize.”

“Any messages?”

“Oh my God, a message from the sheriff,” she screamed.

Matt’s blood curdled.

“Oh my God… Oh my God. There’s been an accident.”

“Put him on speaker.”

She did, and he heard the message.“Ms. Hammer, please come to Bethesda North Hospital, or call me at this number.”

“Oh no, no, please God, no. Mia is hurt or…” she cried.

He squeezed her arm to pull her out of her panic. “Call the number he gave you.”

“Okay.” She copied the number and called, leaving the phone on speaker.

The line opened. “Sheriff Turner.”

“Sheriff, this is Dr. Hammer, Mia’s mother. What… What happened?” Her voice broke.

“There’s been an accident.”

“Is Mia…” She couldn’t finish. Tears glistened on her pale face.

“Sheriff, this is Dr. Winston. Is Mia Hammer alive and injured, or…?”

“Yes, she’s alive and injured. They’re assessing the kids’ injuries at the hospital ER.”

“Can you send a police car to clear the way with a siren?” He specified his location.

“Stop your car in the emergency lane and put your blinkers on. A police car is catching up with you.”

“Okay, I see them.” Matt turned his high beam on and off several times.

“Let him pass you and follow at the same speed,” the sheriff instructed.

“Thank you. We’re on it.”

Anguish seared his heart as he glanced at Brenda.

Slumped in despair, she sobbed and prayed.

There was nothing he could say or do to soothe her worries.

He focused on the police car, speeding behind it. Ten minutes later, he stopped in front of the ER. Brenda jumped out of the car and ran inside. Matt threw his keys to the police officer.

“Can you park it, please? We need to get to our daughter.”

His pulse racing, Matt dashed behind Brenda.

“Lord help us please,” he prayed for the teenager who’d become like a daughter to him.
