A nurse called to him, “Dr. Winston, do you need me to visit the patients with you? I have their folders.”

“Yes, come along, Marly.” He knocked on the next patient’s door.

“Emily Alvery is in this room.”

Matt entered the room and glanced at the folder Marly handed him.

“I’m Dr. Winston. You must be Mr. and Mrs. Alvery.” He shook hands with them and approached the bed.

“How are you doing, Emily?”

The blonde teen watched him curiously. “I’m doing fine... I mean better.”

“Marly, have her sit up.” He moved his stethoscope to the girl’s back. “Take a deep breath in, hold it, and exhale. Again. Good. Any pain in your chest?”

“No.”

“Any pain anywhere?”

“My head.” Emily touched her forehead.

“Is it like a headache?” She shook her head. “Maybe a tingling? Or a throbbing pain?”

“Yes, a throbbing pain.”

“Any pain in your abdomen? Your back or your legs?”

“No, just in my wrist.” She wrapped her fingers around her right wrist.

He examined her hand, had her flex her fingers and rotate her wrist.

“I can’t rotate it. It hurts.”

“Marly, I want an X-ray of her hand, wrist, and arm. Give her Motrin three times a day.”

He handed the father a couple of sheets. “This is the hospital report. It includes the ER doctor’s diagnosis, the C-scan report on her head, no concussion, and the lab report with the urine and blood tests results.”

Mr. Alvery browsed through the report and gasped. “What’s this? There must be a mistake here. It shows drugs in her blood and urine tests.”

Matt didn’t answer and carefully studied his patient.

She flinched, slid down lower in her bed, and brought the cover all the way to her chin.

“Doctor, you should correct that. Emily has never touched drugs.” A typical loving father’s response.

“You should discuss it with the lab director. I can’t manipulate their report.”

“It’s all because of that girl and her mother,” Mrs. Alvery grumbled. “The mother ignored her promise to pick up the kids, and the daughter brought drugs and caused the accident.”

Damn it, they were accusing Mia. He swallowed a curse, knowing he would do more damage by trying to defend her.

Calmly, he turned to the parents. “Don’t worry, Mr. Alvery. We’ll know the truth soon enough. I heard that a detective will be here soon to interrogate the kids.”

Emily jerked up. “What? Why?”

“Because there’s been an accident, and people were hurt.”

“The nurse said Nick and Mia are in a bad shape and can’t even talk. Is that true?” Emily asked, her voice weak.
